It turns out that the magnetic shift is not what it seems. The ice caps get too heavy and the earth's weight is what shifts to rebalance the gyroscope. This doesn't happen again until after I am unbooted. The magnetic atmosphere stays very similar to itself, it is the underlying weight distribution that adjusts.
