I was wondering where it was exactly. I googled maps, named the bridge that's mentioned, and it took me to Charlottesville. Then I googled York County, and it took me to the Hampton area. My air force uncle (deceased) worked at Langley, lived in Hampton. I stayed there with my aunt a few times, shopped at Langley AFB.

Those cars are mangled. I even hate fender benders. They cause a ton of headaches...find a rental car, call the insurance company, get repairs. If the car is totaled, then you have to go out and buy another. It's awful...and now when people are shopping or traveling to destinations to celebrate Christmas. How sad.

I always listen to talk radio in NJ while in the car. A few months ago the subject was about driving on highways...we have the Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway in NJ. I was shocked to hear people calling in to say they never use those roads because they're afraid of them! Instead, they use local roads. lol

Omg what a mess...looks like they had to climb out of the windows to get out.
Probably folks going home from a weekend of looking at the Christmas lights in Virginia beach.

Yes...it's in the westbound lanes. Just awful. Even if no one is hurt, their holidays are not going to be merry. Most of those cars look as if they are totaled.

Drivers follow too closely..I have to constantly tell my wife to back off on the gas.
I'm curious what was the initial cause and if any big trucks are involved.

I answered my own question..the pics in link show an aerial view..no trucks involved but the road work can be treacherous.

I HATE people who tail gate. My biggest pet peeve. It's so dangerous. My ex used to do that. I still remember, MANY years ago, being stopped on the turnpike by the Pennsylvania State Police. They told him to stop tailgating. I loved it! lol

People tailgate regularly on I-64, going 80 mph with 1 car length between them and the car in front. I despise driving that road in any weather. Fog is a real issue there along the coast. This is going to mess up more than few people's Christmas.

I listen to 101.5's traffic report every 15 minutes. Always accidents on the turnpike, GSP, 287, and 78. I live in south Jersey. Those accidents are usually always up north. My daughter lived in north Jersey for several years, traveled those roads, and I always worried about her until she moved in 2010.

In fact, we were on 287 one night, stop and go traffic...on our way to NYC. Someone ran into the back of us on a rainy night. ARGH. We never got to the theater.

I was there in Virginia Beach in September, but I can't remember what roads we took. Flew into Norfolk, rented a car, and drove to my cousin's house in Virginia Beach. The next day to drove to a beach for a memorial paddle-out then to Sandbridge for a church memorial service in the afternoon.

You were on the South side of the James River so you never got on I 64 most likely. Traffic is too crazy around there for my tastes, I have lots of friends that want us to come but i'm a homebody nowadays. You might want to check out the ARE (assn research enlightenment/edgar cayce) center next time, they have a great bookstore.

My 39 year old cousin died....unexpectedly. So sad! Had an underlying heart problem. Diagnosed when he was in high school, but had no symptoms, so he never followed up on it. We went to his wedding last April. He was a surfer, thus the paddle-out. I forgot what beach....could it have been near Camp Pendleton? I seem to remember "Camp Pendleton Beach." Wow...that paddle-out was quite impressive. My daughter participated.

Regarding Edgar Cayce. I remember being a subscriber years ago, but forgot the center was in Virginia Beach. Thanks for reminding me. I will visit next time I'm there!

The sad part is I can't blame it on tourists since it's Winter.

We have more Ontario license plates on the highways than Virginia license plates in the summer.

ARE is why the Mrs. and I go to Virginia Beach!

The Virginia State Police said fog and ice were present on the roadway at the time of the crash.

According to the Virginia State Police, 35 people were taken to the hospital, with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. At least two people were critically injured.

You mean the BEACHES on Pelee Island are not far enough South for them (southern most part of Canada) and they feel they have to leave Canada to go to the beach?

I was thinking that Canadians should be building a bunch of BIG Resort Hotels on that island so they could keep Canadian Vacation Dollar spending inside Canada at their own beach resorts!!!

(Pelee Island is in the middle of Lake Erie for those of you who are unaware that Canada actually has an almost tropical island environment within it's borders)
