Posterology - A Thread about posting !
It is our online fingerprint, as individual as each one of us!

posting styles are infinitely interesting -

if one day our avatars, sig lines, and tag lines were gone, our styles would still identify us.

just like our voices in real life!

This is not a call out or a call in thread - names of individual posters are not the point! They will be removed if posted.

When I started here, my posting was always pathetic - frequently still is! I learned a lot from observing others and copying their ways - until I found the way I post today. Betting others evolved this way too.

from the most obvious to the least noticeable, from memes to quote tree oddities, this thread will go.

Post your observations!

my bent to "deconstruct" posts comes from a totally useless degree in linguistics ha ha from a European university. The French led the field of deconstructionalism, where all writing is termed a "TEXT" and examined under a microscope the same way. . .

whether it was the Gettysburg Address or graffiti in a women's lavatory.

Re: Posterology - A Thread about posting !
The most visible characteristic is meme use - thanks for the illustration!

memes jump out at you and speak to emotions. they make us laugh or grimace....

some posters use them daily, others never.

most notable about memes - if you like one and have its code and use it, great. But if the poster in whose meme bank it is closes his/her account, the meme is gone.

perdu!

I still miss the meme :tiedupfornow: or similar - it was a
stunning visual of a shackled man smoking presumably his final cigarette.

one time a poster, years ago, responded on threads only using memes. This was completely unlike his normal style! People asked what was wrong. They only got memes

turned out he had decided to restrict himself to posting without words for a week

kind of like the GLP version of laryngitis

Brevity or the lack of it

giggling as this is kinda close to a name! If you post one short sentence at a time, you are infinitely more quotable.

one of my favorite contributors here writes longer responses that are not easy to quote, but very thought-provoking.

Responding as opposed to Posting threads

a few posters favor one over the other almost exclusively.

both build GLP to the raucous hotel it is!

starting a thread can be much more of a time commitment and more involved in terms of providing links. I should link to Ferdinand Saussure, the father of deconstructionalism, but I am too lazy

Sentence spacing

posting like this, one sentence at a time, lets people see what each bit

kind of like a pause between sentences in a conversation

lets others formulate a response

Others favor the wall of text and not only in quoted material. They can go on and on and for some this may be harder to read. But often the information given this way is very well thought-out.

posting across the width of the page

Some people favor keeping the lines of
text only to half or 2/3 of the width
of the posting field. This goes well
with memes. It has its charm. Never
tried it til now.

Others dash across the field like a horse cantering the length from one fence to another........

Lowercase or uppercase messages

UMM,THIS IS THE WAY FOR MANY AND IT WORKS WELL TO GET ATTENTION. DO NOT DISCOUNT THE POWER OF CAPS.

others favor lowercase even at the beginning or sentences. guilty as charged

did you know that uppercase and lowercase refer to the actual location of the letters? They were stored in boxes or rows, one lower than the other.

Devil's Advocate

Some posters don't really seem to have genuine opinions
or thoughts.

They simply jump in with the opposing position and revel
in the controversy.

Often, though, it is quite entertaining!

Topicality

some posters are closely affiliated with a particular topic or area of interest. it may be their professional field or something particularly close to their hearts.
A thread by one of them is going to be meaty.

hummerbird

others are like the hummingbird, sipping nectar from here and there, topic to topic

Location

closely related to topicality, some posters post mainly in particular threads... kind of like their GLP home or base.

others are all over the map

epic threads are a kind of home - long-running threads about a particular topic. They are a backbone of GLP and storehouses of information

Handling the Quote Tree

most commonly posters post BELOW a quoted post; here I am doing the opposite and posting above the quote.

disorienting, huh? some prefer to do this. works for them.

using a different color for linked material makes it easy to see at a glance which comments are from the poster and which from the quote

overly-done proofreading can make a text seem too formal. In a way, like this.

wherazz when a poster just lets loose, mistakes and all, you knoe they are usually posting form the heart.

Re: Posterology - A Thread about posting !
Probably because I am a "fan" of writing in general
I really would love to see some of the "old timers" on
GLP offer up some examples of their earliest GLP threads
...as compared to how they post NOW.

I know when I posted my very first post on GLP (besides
just one or two sentences) I was terrified! I actually
had to have a "GUIDE POST" (lol! play on words) help me
get up the nerve with some tips to help out.

Below is one of my first posts under my first Avatar (I lost my
password to my Yahoo account so I had to change it later.)
You can see I experimented with videos (now scrubbed, of course), memes and TEXT COLORS. (My GLP "posting mentor"
posts on page 1...was a really nice person.
Thread: Prometheus2: VATICAN'S secret is NOT "Why did the Pope Resign?" They were standing on it as they elected the new Pope!

I have to laugh now because it is obviously a little wordie
and hard to read. But still...a learning process. (I will
have to read the thread again I have forgotten the "news!"

This is one of my latest thread that is a little more brief,
tho I post long ones as a rule--the person who taught me
to post on GLP was very long winded! He has since left GLP
--no clue why.

Thread: "Merging Dimensions" Update pg.6:The SUN may actually exist in TWO different Dimensions! Eric Dollard Video/Art inside.

I love this topic, Beeches! And you are right...you can
tell WHO POSTS by many clues given with their style and
use of memes. GLP members can accumulate 500 memes.

Another member's work I just love is Base12 who used to
post under "Uncle Mikey"--he added Base12 because he wanted
to keep all his pictures and start some new ones! Cute!

Merry Christmas. Thanks for all you do.

cheers
