Genjer genjer from Lilis Suryani.... Not that long ago this was a banned album in Indonesia, it's extremely rare, most copies were destroyed by the government, if you were caught with a copy of this album you could be tortured, imprisoned, even murdered if they really didn't like you....

When I found and bought a copy years ago it all went very hush hush and I had to swear I wasn't gonna tell anybody where I got it....

This song was always played at meetings from Gerwani, the female wing of the Indonesian Communist Party and communism is officially banned in Indonesia.... The song has nothing to do with politics, it's about a poor old woman who takes some water spinach from the river, eats some and then tries to sell some of it on the market....

There's also the version of Bing Slamet, also a banned record, also extremely rare and I've got that one too :)



It's still very dangerous to play this song, even now, older people get VERY nervous if you play it....

And it's such a beautiful song.....
