It's not just young people, it's all people that are constantly engaged with the internet and social media.

Concentration, attention, thinking and all mental labor requires energy just like physical labor.

A large portion of the population regardless of age are spending many hours concentrating intently on their little screens scouring the net and social media.

All those hours of rapt attention are tiring them out and by the time they get to your class they are already mentally exhausted which makes it hard for them to pay attention in class without feeling tired.

There isn't much you can do about it because you can't control your students in the hours they are not in your class.

I would like to say that lowering the temperature is shooting you in the foot, because i know I and many others actually feel more tired when we are cold, more so then hot.

I have been teaching Nursing courses for 17 years. It includes lecture and bed side demonstration and practice time.

This last year, for the first time...

I notice so many student are zoning out shutting their eyes.

Before you write nasty notes to me about my teaching, I will say NO.... it is not me as a teacher. I talk loud and I am very engaging instructor.

I think it is something else.
There minds are over-whelmed.

Also kids today don't seem to have just common sense.

Nursing is very technical and very step by step memorization of clinical skills.

I have taught these classes for over 17 years.

I am keeping the AC down lower to make them cold so they wont go to sleep.

But I truly believe something is very off her with the young people.

I zone out if I am under flouerescent lighting.
Don't know why that is, but I do.
Even while attending seminars where I reall want to learn something new.
Maybe you can try different lighting or lamps? Teachers having to teach add or dyslexic students also have succes if they use a different color transparent sheet over the material being taught.

Interesting. I have a similar problem. The lights actually make me feel tired. Not sure why.

I didn't have a phone until I was a teenager and they weren't used much at that time. I had similar issues, sitting still in a classroom environment puts me to sleep even when I'm not tired even when I slept plenty the night before on a typical schedule.

Screens disrupt sleep cycles. Established fact. When kids go to bed with their phones and wake up to check notifications, deep sleep is not established. Same goes for Netflix or some other streaming source on a tablet or TV right by the bed.

Ask any thirty year teacher if they've noticed a rise
in autism.

Of course there is a huge increase in autism.
The screen is their window on the world.

There is no way to force an autistic person to not be
autistic.

Neurological shocks from toxins and vaccines are the problem.

They are used to and addicted to constant electronic stimulus especially of the adhd causing variety
30 second attention spans have been programmed into everyone since birth
It's especially easy with the advent of all these electronic devices
The addiction is often so severe that they can't even microwave dinner without tv or games yapping at them while they wait for 90 seconds
And without the stimulus they often simply shut down and glaze out
The ability to engage in Anything real life is severely retarded by these devices
and stimulus
Teach your kids of the danger and keep them engaged in real life as a child
It is the only thing that protects against it
The devices are not a babysitter

They are all nicely fully vaccinated with potent neurotoxins (much more than any other generation), with over 50% having a chronic illness/es and irradiated with wireless microwaves.

Shouldn't be too much longer before a full on societal collapse.

Your writing skills are subpar for being a teacher for 17 yrs. are you adjunct faculty or something? Anyway, lowering the a/c is not going to fix the problem. It might make it worse. And who cares if they don’t pay attention to what professional dick face has to say, it’s their money, their life. As long as they’re passing their exams and the NCLEX, what do you care?

To much sugar and caffeine, eating foods like Pizza to late at night, being up until 2 or 3 am, no exercise or disciplined routines, Keggers every night in the dorm room. Most of them don't really want to be nurses at all, they want access to hard drugs, high income, are control freaks, want to snatch a Dr, and about 10% are outright Sadists looking for career opportunities.

OP, as a 16 year teacher of 16 year olds, I know what you're talking about.

The main problem is the phones have them addicted to scrolling every waking moment.

When I started this job it was flip phones with limited and expensive texting and kids would forget their phones all the time. Nobody has forgotten their phone in the past 4 years.

I've gotten through to some students, even had one thank me repeatedly for pointing out that their difficulty learning was caused by lack of sleep.

5 hours sleep per night for 3 nights straight reduces ability to function to WORSE than legally drunk.

florescent lights drain me, I will literally keel over and pass out within 1/2 an hour. Most classrooms and offices have them in abundance. I met a girl who could have a seizure from lighting or computer screens...

I am not certain if monitors and TV's may affect people in the same way.

Some people find "relief" by using blue blocking sunglasses...most newer phones have that as an option

A program called "Flux" can also help moderate lighting on monitors...hope that helps.
