Re: Young adults today have sleeping issues during education classes.
I have been teaching Nursing courses for 17 years. It includes lecture and bed side demonstration and practice time.

This last year, for the first time...

I notice so many student are zoning out shutting their eyes.

Before you write nasty notes to me about my teaching, I will say NO.... it is not me as a teacher. I talk loud and I am very engaging instructor.

I think it is something else.
There minds are over-whelmed.

Also kids today don't seem to have just common sense.

Nursing is very technical and very step by step memorization of clinical skills.

I have taught these classes for over 17 years.

I am keeping the AC down lower to make them cold so they wont go to sleep.

But I truly believe something is very off her with the young people.

Well I know a couple of possible reasons. They are either out partying late (more likely with the young crowd) or they are dead tired from working late to pay the bills. I know someone going to nursing school, full time, but also has to work as many hours as she can get because she has rent, car note, insurance and a child to care for. It's tough when you try to improve your lot in life, but you are already well into life with all the responsibilities.

It's the bed side demonstration and practice time that's causing your problem.

They are used to and addicted to constant electronic stimulus especially of the adhd causing variety
30 second attention spans have been programmed into everyone since birth
It's especially easy with the advent of all these electronic devices
The addiction is often so severe that they can't even microwave dinner without tv or games yapping at them while they wait for 90 seconds
And without the stimulus they often simply shut down and glaze out
The ability to engage in Anything real life is severely retarded by these devices and stimulus
Teach your kids of the danger and keep them engaged in real life as a child
It is the only thing that protects against it
The devices are not a babysitter

I think this is a larp.

There are things wrong on every line in the OP, including the title.

Sleeping issues happen when you are trying to sleep.
Trouble staying awake is what you would have when in class.

so many problems.

The difference in focus and reaction between tired and well rested students is like night and day.
They see the difference themselves.

The problem is, they don't know from life experience like older people, you have to somehow show them.

Only those who deal with the problem daily and have seen it for years will know what the OP is really describing.

It really is lack of sleep.

(YES, computer games and phones are a huge reason they are lacking sleep, but the resulting lack of sleep leads to learning difficulties.)

I come from a family of pretty good genetics. My ex-girlfriend not so much. However, my nieces and nephews are dopamine addicted gerbils. My ex's child not one bit. He gets very little TV and tablet use. He's had every vaccine under the sun. My extended family's kids not so much, but they had most.

My point is my ex's kindergartener just turned six years old yesterday and my nieces and nephews are all 9 and 10. The six year old runs circles around the others in vocabulary and social skills. I'm saddened by it all really. My sister and brother fight with their spouses over too much video game and YT time but they just don't care. They grew up playing video games and watching PG13 movies and cartoons from toddlers onward. My sister and brother each have three kids, while my ex has one. The six year old is an only child. He can build things like a 10 year old. He knows the names of most dinosaurs and can say them flawlessly. He can add and subtract and count to 1000. No joke. He can count backwards. If you asking what goes between 158 and 160, he'll tell you 159. My ex takes him to all kinds of outside/outdoor activities.

I'll say this. They never baby talked to him. Never. My family baby talked to all of my nieces and nephews, except me. But that's just one element here. This kid is loving and caring but bull headed like no other. He's manipulative and cunning. My family's kids are better behaved but their attention span is all over the place. They bounce around. Twirl around. Take little time to figure something out and as soon as they get home from wherever, they turn on the TV, a video game, or play on their phones. Crazy. They are absolutely addicted. My ex's child, when he was over to my sister and brother's home, had no desire to even look at the TV or phone, while all the others were playing video games or just surfing YT for dumb car racing and monster truck videos, my ex's six year old would beg me to go play with him out on the swing set or take the dog for a walk or just sit and play Legos. He'd liked puzzles too. I think he was only ever exposed to one movie up until last month when we split.

He's a prodigy compared to any child his own age and he eat crap. She feeds him the worst of foods, whereas my sister and brother do a much better job of monitoring the quality (organic and non GMO).

I left the comment above yours here.

I'm starting to see that it is a major culprit. Of course, vaccines and poor diet play a role but I see childhood gaming and long hours of cellphone use for YT watching and Facetime as the major contributor. Poor parenting too. Not enough outside play that facilitates imagination and creativity. No good music.

My ex plays classic jazz, blues and classical music all day while he was a baby through now while he was home with her.

Just to add. He also asks highly intelligent questions. Questions that my 9 and 10 year old nieces and nephews would never ponder, let alone ask. Shockingly profound, inquizitive curiosity that I just would have to take a few seconds to consider that this dialogue and mind processing was coming from a five year old. I don't know if he's just very gifted or I'm used to kids with little social skills because they are entertained 24/7.

This is so true. You just described my 9 and 10 year old nieces and nephews. They are running gerbils on dopamine. No dope, not life. They are in a depressed stupor.

Thank God I never got into video games. I new from a young age, they were not good. I had little interest, probably because my imagination was running wild from all the inside and outside playtime with kids my own age. We were creative in coming up with games and building things or even just playing with our trucks, legos, or doll houses if a girl. They would play dress up too.

Watching videos and playing games is not using one's imagination. Development of those games and videos does, but playing them is only using one component of intelligence: strategization.

It's cell phones. I work at a High School even the "smartest" students can't remember or type a code to print their homework.

I have to always do it for them even with instructions with clear visual aids.

They simply do not have the brain capacity anymore, and everyone should be worried.

Your AC is probably too low. It's just a physical thing. The body has to generate a lot of heat as well as feeding the brain with energy. You know this if you're in nursing.

Do you notice some students wearing gloves and hats during class? Maybe coats? It's just something that happens when you're forced to sit in a sedentary condition in the cold. (I was a nurse too.)

A person must be physically comfortable to maintain awareness, otherwise their body concentrates on shutting down to preserve vital functions and they'll dial back their brain function too. The first thing that happens to a person in extreme cold is that they get sleepy.

I had a couple teachers at my youngest's high school making the same mistake. It got so bad that the local urgent care clinic called a meeting with the principal of the school to discuss their higher-than-average flu rates. Keeping the temperature too high would have a bad effect too. But for most, if you put the temperature below 72 degrees and they are all sitting in chairs instead of being active, they'll shut down to preserve bodily functions, starting with the brain.

If you absolutely must have it at a lower temperature because you're suffering from hot flashes or something, allow the students to wear gloves, hats and coats and even hand-warmer packs to combat the physical fatigue of fighting the cold.

Remember, the temperature directly under an air conditioning vent can be as low as 52 degrees. That's cold enough to make a person sleepy and more susceptible to illness.

Americans are the laziest in education, this is why they are losing their jobs.

Look at asians, they do double the hard work and education studies, surpassing the USA. This new age of lazy socialism, americans and europeans have is embarrassing, no one wants to work hard anymore. While asians are surpassing you guys.

Your writing skills are subpar for being a teacher for 17 yrs. are you adjunct faculty or something? Anyway, lowering the a/c is not going to fix the problem. It might make it worse. And who cares if they don’t pay attention to what professional dick face has to say, it’s their money, their life. As long as they’re passing their exams and the NCLEX, what do you care?
