The time to do it was last Thursday at the close.

This market has one more high to go (at least) then it will topple over. Wait for the S&P500 to hit ~3267 and go with out of the money SPY puts -- at least 3 months out.
The S&P will lose ~1000 points, the DOW 8-10K points, then afterward another parabolic move up.

**Maybe** the S&P drops to 3189 or 3155 before turning back up, but I doubt we see a major crash here. It needs a new high first.

I've double'd down on these calls currently @43... it worked very well a year ago. Now it's a nail biter.

Options deteriorate quickly in the last 30 days. Buy that far out (but out of the money) so you don't lose much in premium while waiting for a sharp move.

You also want to be able to stay in the trade once it is working in your favor. What if the market topped on Jan 10 or Jan 12 and bottomed on Feb 24? That gives you enough time to scale out of the trade early and leave the rest sitting there on house money until you see it turn up again.

Unloaded my VIX on the 7th for a 25% LOSS, hung on to my DFS until the 8th, made 20%.
