The Rod from God would penetrate several hundred feet into the Earth, destroying any hardened concrete bunkers or secret nuclear enrichment underground sites in perhaps EyeRan.. Can you imagine the sound of one of these Rods striking in say EyeRan?

The Rod from God then goes through Earth’s atmosphere, eventually smashing into the target in EyeRan and into the crust of the earth hundreds of feet...

RODs from GOD with the kinetic POWER of a tactical nuke, causes the crust to crack, spewing dirt and tearing up the ground as the shockwave travels, a man made earthquake no doubt.... With no hazardous fallout...

Retired aerospace engineer here.

The ideal orbit for such weapons is not low Earth orbit.

Although this would provide a more rapid response, it would require that the rod was on an orbit that crossed almost directly over the target. This is because it would not have cross range capability a la Space Shuttle.

Ideal orbit is very high and elliptical. The energy required to change the orbit and cause impact over a wide target area is miniscule at apogee.

Plus, the impact would be at Mach 25 or thereabouts, not Mach 10.

Remember that energy is mass times velocity SQUARED, so higher velocity means a lot more energy.

I never was briefed on such weapons. However, the logic is the same.

The math says that if the "telephone pole" is made out of tungsten (very expensive!), then the enemies may not be able to bury their facilities deep enough.

BTW, I was on a panel discussion with Jerry Pournelle in 1984 to speak about Star Wars projects.
