He feels Wal-Mart has a legal right to check purchases. Walmart has legal right to request a receipt. The owner of the item has the legal right to refuse that request. If they try to stop you without probable cause it's false imprisonment and possibly even false arrest. Also, in most states they can't physically touch you unless they've witnessed you commit a felony. Not everywhere, though. In other words, the only time they can demand proof of payment is when they already witnessed you stealing something. This even applies to Sam's Club. At best, if you refuse at Sam's Club they can terminate your membership (doubtful). |

Turns out there are very strict rules for determining probable cause for shoplifting. For the most part, legally you can say NO and walk on out. But my deeper question is, are we somehow being conditioned to accept these warrant-less searches? Is there some deeper agenda behind this other than shrink control? What are your thoughts? I know I hate to be a dick to a 75 yo making 10/hr but I'm getting sick of these searches personally. It just struck me though that perhaps it is more than Walmart trying to cut its losses from shoplifting. Quoting: diverdan01 [link to www.themillennialman.com] The only time I have seen them do this is if you have items on the bottom of your cart. They are checking the receipt to see if the items were scanned. Sometimes people forget to put the items on the belt, other times the checker doesn't look at the bottom of cart and I have even seen checkers forget to scan the bottom of cart even after they were told items were there. |

It wasn't much, but it would have been a real hassel if they'd found that it wasn't paid for. It was never my intention to steal it, it was just covered up by some large objects that they scanned in my cart. Quoting: Pilgrim001 Yeah, it's crazy how those HDTV's get buried in your cart and missed during self-checkout, isn't it? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 3721136 United States 01/12/2020 01:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Theft hurts everyone including the customer. Receipts are scanned so if your receipt is lost, it prevents a thief from picking it up and going shopping with that receipt. It also prevents a theft from going 2-4 rounds of stealing the same products with one original purchase receipt at the same or multiple stores. Yes thieves pretend to shop with the original purchases receipt and pass it off as buying the said products again and again. Scanning receipts prevents this. Once a scanned receipt is in the system it ultimately prevents theft. It cuts down shrink and therefore also saves customers money because prices aren’t increased due to theft. Yet don’t worry, for those that don’t want to scan their receipts attitude, in near future, you will be forced to order your products online, prepaid, and pickup your purchases at a warehouse hub. There will be no more going into a store. This is the future. |

When I dyed my hair bright pink, the liberal left junkies stopped checking my receipt. Dye your hair pink. They look the other way. Not.even.kidding. The old retiree-age men still check the receipt, but only if you make eye contact. |

And they're part of Walmart. Sams club is a membership store. If it is within the contract you signed, they have a right to do it. |

In Theory, the right to check your cart and receipt in COSTCO is part of your membership agreement. Walmart on the other hand has no membership agreement. Not an issue of manning up, just feel back for the poor 80yo they have doing this shit. You don’t always have the same rights on private property. My work can search me whenever the fuck they want without probably cause and that’s not necessarily because I signed some shit when I started. They can search vendors and anybody who enters the door if they want. They can have security throw you out the door regardless of whether you broke a law. They can spy on you record you etc |
