Doubtful this has anything to do with poles shifting but rather everything to do with an infrastructure made out of asphalt sustaining billions of tons of weight while underneath, massive pipes, cables, sewers and sometimes subways co-exist.

The planet is not overpopulated. Certain areas are though.
75% of Americans live within 200 miles of the coastline.
That leaves 25% of the entire middle of the country sparsely populated.
