Paper and Foam Plates VS. Using & Washing Dishes-Pros and Cons ????
I use disposable plates for almost everything. Paper ones are about 1.6 cents each @ Walgreen's on sale. After adding up the costs of dish soap, hot water, scrubbies, and all the time involved in washing, I believe it's actually cheaper to mostly use the disposable ones. Add in the costs of a dis
hwasher and it's a no brainer. Anyone else?

I do use glass bowls for cereal and many other runny foods, & the occasional Corelle plate for a special meal, but always keep at least 1000 of the paper ones on hand. My time is valuable to me, and washing dishes is for the maid I wish I could afford.

We did an experiment back in college micro bio class where we cultured so called clean plates after hand washing and machine washing versus paper plates and plastic cutlery...the single use products were by far cleaner than plates handwashed and much cleaner than those machine washed...so unless its a special occasion I always use paper and plastic for everyday and just try not think about it when i dont...but then im single and do not have to answer to anyone about my habits

I never use foam ones, but imagine if you can get them at a low cost they can serve a purpose too. Don't know how the break down in a landfill. I'm all in on Walgreen's paper ones!

I rather use baking soda and vinegar to hand wash dishes. The vinegar comes by the gallons and does not cost much, the baking soda comes by the 4 LB box.
Cleans stoneware cups and glass very clean and some metals.
Cleans the coffee decanter that is glass and stainless out well.
I use it with laundry for white cotton socks and other fabrics as well.

I use it for glass and tile cleaning also.
Paper plates are useful for the microwave when capping off another plate to be heated.

Foam travel cups are bought more than any other thing to avoid having your more expensive travel cups stolen.
There are certain soaps that do not cost much that also clean laundy well, right along with skin and hair.

When the detergents start costing a lot, the old way replaces them.

I actually got a lot out of this thread, 5 stars and thank you OP!

I love these little tidbits on GLP, I have just moved into a new place and I am near on broke, I have no plates and this just may well be the solution I need.

I love my plates, they are beautiful, like art that I use daily. I wash them by hand because I never want them to get ruined.

I use paper only occasionally when I want a day off off dishes.

single use containers generate far more trash. A little dawn in the ecosystem does very little harm in the scheme of things. A bigger issue is all of the packaging. For some little gadget, so much packaging and shipping crap is used to get it from the manufacturer to the consumer

I have a dish washer, but I don't use it. It is old and does not work well. I do all of the dishes by hand. My dishes are also mismatched because they come from the thrift store. I would only eat on paper plates at a picnic.

Re: Paper and Foam Plates VS. Using & Washing Dishes-Pros and Cons ????
I would love to use paper plates but it's really not that cost effective. Washing dishes, even with the cost of water, electric, soap, is cheaper for me. I hand wash my mismatched dishes that I pick out because I thought they were pretty at flea markets, garage sales and other places. I like ceramic/glass plates. Hate plastic ones. But as I have a friend that seems to break dishes, no she isn't throwing them around in a fit of anger, she is just clumsy as crap, she need plastic non-breakable ones. Kids do too. But buying paper, because I will not use the foam ones, was out of my budget's reach. Although I tried really hard because I am lazy and don't like washing dishes but I hate dishwashers more so.... I hand wash my dishes and don't worry about things I will not change. LOL

If I wasn't so lazy, I would never consider using paper plates at home because I think food should look pretty, smell tempting, taste great and be something I look forward to. But then, as lazy as I am, I tend to eat a lot of sandwiches too. LOL Make them look fancy by cutting in half, putting on plate with a bowl of soup or a pile of chips on the side. Or use a disposable paper towel and eat the chips out of the bag and soup out of the pot you cooked it in. Saves on washing dishes. LOL

But really, I pay for my garbage to be removed. I have also lived in neighborhoods that didn't have garbage pickup and you had to burn or take off your garbage yourself. Rinse out all the food and stuff or critters got into your garbage and scattered it. You learn that paper plates are garbage you can live without. For me, in reality, it's a garbage thing. Maybe I'll buy another burn barrel.... Let the garbage go and save some cash.... Naw, I won't. I'm lazy like that. LOL
