One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. In this interview Ralph Ellis and I discuss the incredible significance of the Avebury Henge and it's sister site Stonehenge. Quoting: Person445 Built and used by druids? How did the stones get there? An astrological calendar? I used to think Stonehenge was the coolest thing ever. Until I learned it was completely destroyed by bombing during WWII. And later rebuilt. It's a copy of the original. |

An architect, Inigo Jones, surveyed the monument and guessed it was the work of the Romans. lol Romans Heaven Can Wait |

It was a place with a vibe unlike any other I’ve ever experienced. Truly majestic place! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77595028 I'd honestly never heard of it b4. It looks like such a quaint little town. Be nice to spend a night there and have some drinks in the local tavern. And there is just the one local tavern. The town is miniscule. I spent one summer solstice overnight there. Anonymous Coward User ID: 78342876 United Kingdom 01/18/2020 05:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Avebury is not an original stone circle, it was reconstructed in the 1930's: it was partly destroyed by the archaeologist, Alexander Keiller, the marmalade heir, who bought Avebury in 1934. Few will know that Avebury today is largely Keiller's creation. As well as knocking down buildings, he removed fences, dynamited trees, re-erected megaliths and set concrete markers where he believed stones would have been. Be nice to spend a night there and have some drinks in the local tavern. The Pub in the middle of the complex has a table that's over the original well, it's illuminated under a glass top ! At the solstices Stonehenge is under siege these days, access to the 'drove' has been stopped at these times too now, so no overnight gathering. English Heritage are openly selling private access the rest of the year.. In the morning it's a sea of Iphones, attention-seekers and armed police so most of the 'old crowd' go to Avebury at the solstices now. |
