Advice for those buying guns on a budget, my experience..
I own these weapons, I'm on a budget & research the heck & shop around a ton before buying!

Mossberg 88 .12 gauge shotgun short barrel, excellent shotgun Paid $169 at Academy (Same platform as the Army's 590)

Canik 9mm 18 round Paid $389 at Academy...excellent gun with great reviews, shoots great & very, very accurate

.308 bolt action Ruger American Rifle, paid $401 at a local gun store, I've shot less than 1 MOA at 200 yards with a 16' barrel! I spent as much for the scope as the gun. A Primary Arms SLx 1-8x24mm SFP Rifle Scope - Illuminated ACSS paid $389 for the scope

Maybe the best concealed carry gun there is, S&W .38P model 642, hammerless, easily fits in my pocket & will not get snagged in my pants & super light!

Been researching for over 6 months & have decided to buy an AR platform in 300 Blackout, the reasons, #1 it has a threaded barrel for a suppressor, & with sub sonic ammo, this thing is whisper quiet, plus the 300 blackout has significantly more stopping power than an AR15 5.56, (beginner hog hunter) You're not allowed to hunt hogs, deer etc with a 5.56/.223 in Texas

My next gun: Diamondback DB15 .300 Blackout 16-inch 30Rd 12-inch KeyMod Rail $524. waiting for it to go on sale again, which these guys do all the time, seen it before at $480, then I'll grab it! [link to grabagun.com (secure)]

No going to argue calibers, but welcome any thoughts! Or questions a good deals...

I'd ditch the Canik, I see too much negative reviews.

Mossberg and Savage are okay.

S&W probably okay.

Blackout is a good choice in pistol/short barrel,
better energy delivery and blast then 223.

Yeah, I hear you on the Canik, I think it's because its a Turkish made pistol that folks have a problem with it, but since they're in NATO, their quality control is excellent & I'm very happy with it!

But keep in mind, I'm on a tight budget for guns...per the wife...lol If I had the funds, my dream gun is Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM 16 .308 Rifle, out of my price range though

lol good deals in France mean somebody f*#ked it up, so far though have been able to put them right.
Just for instance bought a 12 gauge (spanish) coach gun from an armory they had put the sears in the wrong way round so major misfire on one barrel. but the price of 120 euros as opposed to 460 made it worthwhile.
Bought a Ruger new Vaquero 357 in stainless front sight had been bent ! somehow again 400 opposed to 780 still shoots to the left a little.
Next Taurus PT92 brand new special offer 500 euros fore sight out of line and safety mechanism fouled the the slide when loading .

Again the same with under lever rifles always something to fix even if you pay decent money , it seems the French love to strip a gun down but have no talent in putting it back together correctly even the pro's are crap .

Re: Advice for those buying guns on a budget, my experience..
To the Canik naysayers, I have to say that you are wrong. You are stating opinions about the quality of a gun that you admit you do not own. That's like my kids telling me they don't like broccoli but have never put it in their mouth.

I have over 50 firearms, most of them are pistols. I have some very expensive firearms well into the thousands of dollars and I have some that are in the $250 - $400 range. The Canik TP9SF Elite might be one of the best shooting guns I own. The trigger is fantastic, the weight and balance are perfect for a duty size firearm and manages recoil impulse. The sight picture is great, it comes with a match grade barrel and is very easy to take down and reassemble.

Any reliability issues have always been ammo related and I've never had a failure to feed or eject.

As for it being a clone, who cares? I have some awesome CZ clones (Tanfoglio, BUL Armory, Rock Island) and tons of 1911 clones (Kimber, Wilson Combat). Saying a gun is a copy of someone else's design and therefore not good is really shallow. There are not too many original designs on firearm action in the first place and most major gun manufacturers copy aspects of proven gun design.

So what if it is made in Turkey. How many people love an AK and remember that they were made by our mortal enemy, the USSR.

Another great gun for less than $300 is the Taurus G2C and the full size G3.

OP, you have a good list going.

Good list except for the turkish pistol.

I have been shooting pistols for over 50 years, and the absolute BEST pistol, for reliability, accuracy, and price, is the Smith & Wesson M&P 40.

I'm not going to argue the 9mm vs 40 cal thing, because anyone that believes a 9 is superior to 40cal knows nothing about ballistics.

M&P 40's can be had from $300-up.

Mine has a Crimson Trace green laser sight mounted on the small rail, under the barrel. Simply awesome!

but it's not cheap to shoot. If you are on a budget, it's going to get expensive really quick for ammo.

Exactly what I was going to bring up.

If you reload it’s great. Lots of bullet choices in 30 cal. You can even cut down and reshape .223 brass you pick up.

But if you’re buying off the shelf on a budget, it’s pricey. Even if just to target practice.

The 300 Blackout round is pretty similar in performance to 7.62x39 from what I hear. I'm no expert on this caliber, but if so, 7.62x39 is much cheaper cost than 300 Blackout. More rounds for the buck. I would check that out.

Was doing some self education this morning, and this article seemed pretty good.

[link to www.shootingillustrated.com (secure)]

From what I see, summary is that ballistics are almost identical between 7.62x39 and .300 blackout. 7.62x39 is a whole lot cheaper cost wise. However, if you are looking for the AR platform, and advantage of .300 blackout is that it can use existing AR lowers and 5.56 mags. So one only has to buy a .300 blackout upper. A person could have an upper in each caliber and be ready to go for both. Plus, there are subsonic loads in .300 blackout if you're looking for that. Again, drawback is a much higher ammo cost though.

Not only that, 9mm gets more capacity and quicker follow up shots.

.40 was a fad round that came about because FBI limp wrist shooting instruction made it hard for weaker recruits to properly shoot the 10mm.

If you want to buy on a budget then look at the trader forums and local gunshows. Look for a private sale at gunshow. With little networking there are great deals to be had for name brand firearms.

As far as 300BO, I see the need if you plan to room clear, but can just as easily use a bolt gun from a safe distance. I sold my 300BO.

Cheaper practice with the 40.

I find it funny he's on a budget yet wants 300 blk. So you are broke but want a 300 blk ar so you can pay $200 for a tax stamp then much more for a silencer. All for a rifle you wont find ammo for and has a suppressed range of what? 50 yards+.

Get an ar. Thats great. Everyone should have at least 5. Look into 6.5 grendel. The russians are switching over to it in their aks which means the chi coms will follow suit. The us will eventually switch to it after playing with their 6.8 overpriced junk. 6.5 grendel also is more accurate and carries more energy downrange than the 7.62x51 lr308/ar10 platform.

Btw mossberg doesn't make a model 88. Thats a maverick 88. Made by mossberg but its their box store cheaper line. I have 1. Fine weapon, not knocking it. Just bugs me when people change names of stuff for whatever their reason.

Not only that, 9mm gets more capacity and quicker follow up shots.

.40 was a fad round that came about because FBI limp wrist shooting instruction made it hard for weaker recruits to properly shoot the 10mm.

The 10mm is where it's at but I still carry 9mm and 45acp just as much.

40 was a fad round? You stupid shits try to talk like you know ballistics, but you know SHIT!!

With a 40, opposed to a 9, you don't need follow up shots!

The 10 is a buck twenty, or more, for hollow points.

The 40 is 60 to 90 cents. DO THE MATH!!

Cheaper practice with the 40.

FAD ROUND. WHAT A FHHAGGGG!

I think he's backwards. If anything I'd class the 10mm as a fad round. Having said that I carry another that could be called a fad round, the 357sig. I changed from the 40 to it because I shoot the 357 better, ymmv. Downside is ammo cost over the 40, but a 2 minute barrel swap and I'm shooting 40 again.
I don't agree with the FBIs assertion that the 9mm is where it's at. I hold to the idea of the perfect round for you is the 1 you shoot well. Big deal you carry a 10mm or 45 mag if you flinch so badly that you can't hit what you need to hit. I'd rather you hit your target with a 380 acp than miss with a 45acp.
The other side was the study that said no matter what pistol caliber is shot, the average is 1.47 rounds to stop a threat.

You're not allowed to hunt hogs, deer etc with a 5.56/.223 in Texas

True, many states do not allow use of calibers below 6 mm for deer hunting.
