Riff. Was just thinking about ya.... how are you and Raffette enjoying your less stress week?

And then on a sad note, the American Diabetes’s Association lost an amazing advocate

 Quoting: CleverCreator

We're doing okay. I'm still stressing despite efforts to the contrary, but that's just my personality and I know that. Raffette and I are running various scenarios with each other - even unlikely ones - just so we have some semblance of a plan in place no matter what happens. I figure we still have 4 to 8 weeks before things get really bad, so I just keep topping off preps. Working mostly on ammunition right now.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

I am sorry that your stressing has a hard time turning off.

Yah. Scenario running is what keeps us ahead of the storm.

My heart hurts for those that aren’t prepared, but even fema ran commercials and ads for years.... even a month would have been better than nothing.
 Quoting: CleverCreator

I have been preaching for YEARS about the need to have some basic level of preparedness, even if it's only 72 hours. Indiana has tornadoes, snowstorms, and damaging winds that result in power outages all the time. Why every Hoosier would not have a basic kit stashed somewhere to get them through a few days without power is beyond me.

So my heart doesn't ache. They're heard my warnings. Anyone who chose to ignore those warnings gets no sympathy from me.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

A 72 hour kit is useless. If you aren't preparing for the end all be all of economic collapses, you're just wasting your time.
We do not learn from history because our studies are brief and prejudiced. In a surprising manner, 250 years emerges as the average length of national greatness. This average has not varied for 3,000years. The stages of the rise and fall of great nations seem to be:
The Age of Pioneers , The Age of Conquests ,The Age of Commerce ,The Age of Affluence ,The Age of Intellect ,The Age of Decadence.
Decadence is marked by: Defensiveness, Pessimism, Materialism,Frivolity An influx of foreigners The Welfare State A weakening of religion. Decadence is due to: Too long a period of wealth and power, Selfishness Love of money ,The loss of a sense of duty.
The life histories of great states are amazingly similar, and are due to internal factors. Their falls are diverse, because they are largely the result of external causes. - Sir John Glubb The Fate of Empires

UK: Everyone aged 50 to 70 may be forced to stay at home in the event of a second wave according to the Daily Mail;

Millions of overs 50s could be given orders to stay at home as part of Boris Johnson's 'nuclear plans' to avoid another national lockdown.

In a more 'segmented approach' to dealing with future lockdowns, people aged between 50 and 70 would be given personalised risk ratings - taking into accounts factors like their age and conditions - and asked to shield in the event of an outbreak.

This is going to be an ongoing situation for many years, why not early retire everyone over 50 years old?

50? They are going to lose a shit ton of experienced health care workers. Sure, the younger workers right out of school are bodies to fill positions, but the knowledge base is not there unitl you've been a nurse for at least 5-10 years. I mean, critical thinking staying two steps ahead of the illness type experience/knowledge.
 Quoting: Tarnished Halo

I agree, yes especially in the health service, but it's all about targeting the risk demographics.

In the UK, out of 50k deaths, only 500 of those deaths were under 45 years old.

So why not lose some of that experience, keep the economy going and shield the vulnerable age groups?

If this is going to be an ongoing problem, lets adjust our working practices..
 Quoting: The Gent

Because that will take away half of the work force and the other half will lose a lot of workers due to the stress and inexperience. Then, who will pay for the 50+ bills, food, healthcare, etc. I know some 70yo that are healthier than some 30yo. Speaking of the medical profession only, if you could see what I see you'd never go to the hospital without someone in the medical profession with you. These new nurses coming out of school are dumb as shit and too proud to ask for help. That's a deadly combination. I refuse to go unless my husband (paramedic) goes with me in case I can't speak for myself.

Personally, I think if we are going to cull people, it should be the obese, people with DM, HTN, ESRD, cardiac and respiratory issues. In my hospital, every single person who has died had one or more of the above health problems. There have been ZERO people who had no underlying issued die at my hospital in the deep south. That should be a study in itself.

I just reread that and it reads like I wrote it in a snarky tone, but I didn't. Just having a conversation and I know how words can be read out of context sometimeshf

HCQ tards...

Not that Dutchy needs me or anyone else to defend him, but man, HCQ tards need some basic schooling.

Every SINGLE drug used for Covid-19 patients, and yes, it includes HCQ, are nothing but TREATMENTS for SYMPTOMS, and HCQ is basically used for those who are already one leg in the grave.

HCQ is working, it saves lives, (at GREAT RISKS btw, and it really doesn't matter if they get HCQ or not, almost same end result) but to think that HCQ matters in this pandemic is utter stupidity. HCQ, or any other treatment for Covid-19, does exactly NOTHING in stemming the pandemic.

The virus will keep infecting people, keep sending them to hospitals, keep killing them, and treatments will never impact the pandemic.

If I get a fucking cold, I will keep getting it for as long as i am going to live. Same with flu. And the same with Sars 2.

Difference is that cold and flu don't send tens of millions in hospitals and millions in the ground in half a year...and bare in mind, SARS 2 hit us in the fucking Spring and Summer, not in the Fall.

But now the Fall is coming, and more importantly, the Winter is coming.

What the hell will TREATMENTS do when this thing is going to REALLY HIT US in the cold season, and most hospitals will be crammed with all kind of patients, from flu to car accidents...and Covid ON TOP OF THIS, in numbers that will be 10 times bigger then in March-April?

I wish people will stop looking at how many people the virus is killing, because it's not that many, and start realizing at how many is sending to the hospitals...IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING SUMMER.

HCQ, Remdesivir, Zinc, Az, whatever the fuck other shit we use, are not going to make a dent in hospitalizations, and hospitalizations, but more important, ICU hospitalizations is what matter...not the bellow 2% death rate of the virus.

No worries, I get exactly what you are saying, I'm not saying it's fine to cull the over 50's, but under the circumstances, I think from a UK point of view, we have to change to survive.

We can either close the economy down every time virus rates increase or we can make a positive move and adapt our work and life styles to what ever virus situation presents.

For me personally, sitting this virus out with one or two years prep rations isn't living. We have to adapt to survive and if it means changing our working practices and making unpopular decision's, then so be it. Not meaning to make argument with anyone, just the way I see it. hf

It's still pretty friggin cold in New England in March and even April. In my area the average temperature for March was just below freezing with stretches of 10 degrees for several days here and there. Even the April average was only 40 degrees.

Half of US states don't get that cold even at the peak of winter.

I'm sure winter weather isn't going to be a good thing for the outbreak, but to say 10 times the amount in a stretch. We've already seen an uncontrolled outbreak in what is considered peak winter weather for a lot of the world, we know what it looks like.

Canada was even colder during that time period, and they fared better than the US.

Gent.... I see your perspective....

I just know that this virus won’t care about our perspectives. The more it interacts the more the healthy “normals” won’t be coming back from it.

I can sit it out. And will continue to do so because damn humanity ain’t ready for when essential folks get sick .....

Fall.... trucking, clerks, warehouses.... grind to a halt. They will have to send in national guard .... in countries that are blessed. But that won’t last long.

I have to say that I am just baffled at the number of nothingburger/virus-is-a-hoax crowd here on GLP!

Were these folks not here back in January when we first started following this story?

Have they not witnessed the inexorable march of COVID-19 across the globe?

Did they not see the absolutely Draconian measures China implemented to stop the spread in the early days?

Maybe they don't know anyone personally that has suffered and died...mostly alone in a hospital bed...since we had out 1st American death waaaaaaay back on FEBRUARY 6th?

I just...I dunno...maybe they all have Covid-brain or something?

We equals society. Maybe cull was the wrong choice of words. Ban from going out in public or to work should've been used instead. Did you not read the conversation we were having? What the hell will TREATMENTS do when this thing is going to REALLY HIT US in the cold season, and most hospitals will be crammed with all kind of patients, from flu to car accidents...and Covid ON TOP OF THIS, in numbers that will be 10 times bigger then in March-April?
 Quoting: deplorable recollector

It's still pretty friggin cold in New England in March and even April. In my area the average temperature for March was just below freezing with stretches of 10 degrees for several days here and there. Even the April average was only 40 degrees.

Half of US states don't get that cold even at the peak of winter.

I'm sure winter weather isn't going to be a good thing for the outbreak, but to say 10 times the amount in a stretch. We've already seen an uncontrolled outbreak in what is considered peak winter weather for a lot of the world, we know what it looks like.

Canada was even colder during that time period, and they fared better than the US.
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

"Pretty friggin cold in March and April" is not the same as "fuck dear, don't let the dog out the house in December and January, its pee will froze".

You think 10 times the amount of Covid in December and January, compared to March and April, is a stretch? Really? Considering that the only way to battle this virus is the immune system, and that immune system is at lowest levels in the Winter...AND the virus is now endemic and well spread across every single nation?

"Canada was even colder, and they fared better then the U.S"...like this is in any way, shape or form, relevant to the topic.

How about we wait until this winter and compare how will Canada will fare compared to the same Canada back in March-April, and not the U.S.?

You forgot that March and April started with a very low number of infected people, the virus wasn't even a fraction as spread as it is now, it was pretty damn warm, and we also locked-down the world?

Your problem is being unable to piece things together, and unable to project. New England this, Texas that...without even realizing the situation is much more complex and vastly different now then back in March.

But, as I told you, I am waiting until mid to end of August, before raining down on your parade, not because I have anything against you, or I want to be right, and you wrong, but because you are presenting a situation that is not real, and you are doing it intelligently enough for many people to actually believe that you are right.

Not meaning to make argument with anyone, just the way I see it. hf
 Quoting: The Gent

My prepping, is me adapting to survive and preps won't out last the virus, just going to try and make it though the chaos that the virus causes.

 Quoting: John_the_Baptist_

I think it's that and a little more. There are very few, if any, people alive today that remember the Spanish flu outbreak. I can tell you the stories my mom and gramma told about being quarantined in the 40's for measles. I can tell you our doc came to the house when my brothers and I had measles in the 60's. no quarantine that I remember.

People today have no experience with this type of disaster. We're used to going to the doctor and having our problems "fixed" or, at least, having options for treatment. This thing upsets our way of thinking about illness. Before the virus, we got sick, we got over it. Mostly. I still do not know anyone personally that has had it. I think a lot of people are like me. Therefore, if we don't know anyone, it's not happening. Typical response. I DO know it is real, but even still, I personally only know people who know people that have had it. I think that fits for a lot of people today.

All the stats citated in that article is from worldometers, lol. People really need to learn that worldometers is not an official source for info (and could easily be a propaganda site). It can't be relied upon and the numbers they post are not always wrong, but often are wrong. In the case of Sweden their numbers are seriously messed up.

A glance at official info from the EU's CDC shows that Sweden had 1.2 deaths per 100,000 population over the past two weeks = more than 120 deaths total. Yet worldometers displays only about half of that for the last two weeks of July for Sweden.

As a matter of fact, I do read comments and posts on this thread....thoroughly.

It seems de rigeur to post inflammatory comments, and then advise respondents that they "don't understand" what is being said.

My reading comprehension is excellent, and in addition to that, you have a registered account, and rather than edit your remarks, you took the passive-aggressive approach of apologizing for(rather than retracting and/or editing) your remark within the same post that you made it.

I have gained much good info, prep tips, and medical insight from this thread, and it is appreciated.

With that being said, your post is indicative of some of the borderline insanity that is also present here.

EVERY SINGLE NUMBER that they post have a link...and that link is an official link to an authorized source, that anyone can check.

Are they late in updating? Yes, they are, but this doesn't mean they are a propaganda site, nor that they will NOT update the numbers, because they always do.
