Quoting: Texan Buckeye [link to www.kcbd.com (secure)] I don't know if this falls under hopium, kitchen sink, or a might be.I DO know Texas Tech has a lot of researchers on staff and they have great programs. If y'all have already discussed this, please don't eat the messanger! LoL That ones new. And a few new ones are promising.... I just am concerned that they are focused on nasal and lungs. Plus many of these only work in early intervention...... The next mutation could to be the permanent asymptomatic (or longer presymptomatic) phases..... and that throws out so many of these treatments. I want to see the work on tamping down the marrow cells. That would help reduce the cancer risk. If it works as they seem to expect, maybe as an effective prophylactic so that symptoms/asymptomatic becomes irrelevant, because the virus is killed before it can get a grip. Which again takes us back to.... we need daily testing to get it sooner. I apologize....I will continue to point out the flaws because tooooo much excitement and it gets tested..... sure it works, but oh look we can’t test in time or enough virus still escapes to other places or a person was a mouth breather or it got in through the ear canal..... or STD. It’s a coronavirus Asshole. No, I don’t want them to give up, but they have had plenty of time to develop antivirals .... knowing that Mers and Sars could ride again, but here we are..... and I see kitchen sinks .... And yes, they should keep trying. But perspective...... it took decades to get hiv under control. Agreed. I am making the assumption(BIG ONE) that the smart will use it and also continue to take precautions, therefore not becoming spreaders or casualties. Testing would still be necessary, but with more (genuine) negatives.A slow but sure process. Unfortunately it's unlikely to help those who already have it. |

P13315 ... Quoting: dyin This is why I'm currently looking to buy a second house with a well (and fireplace) Get me the fuck off the city dependent water. Ever since Flint happened I will never trust City water ever. I have a well and a fireplace and wouldn’t recommend them as worth moving for at all. Fireplaces take out more heat than they’ll give you and well water is as iffy as city water. For $600 you can get a good s/s distiller. Fireplace, well, and septic makes it very easy to drop off the grid if SHTF, especially if you've made alternate arrangements to power your well pump. If you have just a standard fireplace, then it is definitely inefficient and a lot of heat does indeed escape up the chimney. However, if you have a wood stove or an efficient fireplace insert much more heat gets reflected back inside than goes up the chimney. Around five years ago when we had the "polar vortex" cold snap where it was -20 ambient temperature outside plus wind chill, we lost power for three days. Our new insert was barely a week old at that time, and we were able to heat our entire house with just the fireplace for those three days. The firebrick gets so hot that we can actually let the fire die down and it will continue to put out heat for several more hours. As for well water, we have a decent filtration system in the house, but even without it, I never have to worry about my water source being contaminated due to deliberate acts of terrorism, accidents, or sheer incompetence. I do keep 90 days of potable water on hand just in case, but if my water ever becomes so contaminated that it is undrinkable, we have much bigger life-threatening problems going on. When we were hunting for out first house to buy, I told Raffette that a basement, wood-burning fireplace, and well/septic were requirements I would not negotiate. Given the state of the world, I would never under any circumstances move into a house that did not have those specifications. Riff-Raff I bought a thick s/s thing in the fireplace that’s supposed to send heat back into the room. Is there a type of fireplace insert that does’t require expensive chimney liners? My well is way too deep to work without power but I have year round running creek I can get water from. I do have the well’s holding tank in the crawl space but don’t know how to get to that water. I think it’s under pressure. Do you if there is a way to get to it in an emergency that won’t ruin the system? We had to get a flue lining with our insert, and when we put the wood-burning stove in our basement fireplace we're going to have to have another one put in that flue as well. So I don't think you can get around that. The lining is more expensive than the stove. As for running your well pump, you can have the pump wired to run off a generator fairly easily, but you need to know if your pump is 110 or 220, because that will make a difference in the generator you need. Our pump is 220, and we have a generator with a 220 plug, so all I did was have the people who installed our new pressure tank cut the main power line from the breaker box to the pump and splice in a couple of 220 4-prong connectors. If we lose power, I simply disconnect from the breaker box, connect it to a 220 extension cord to the generator (make sure you use the proper gauge wire), and we have water for as long as I have gasoline to run the generator. If your well is that deep, I don't think there's a non-powered method of getting the water pumped up, but I could be wrong on that. I find it extremely hard that millions have turned their back yards into gardens. There's no shortage of books on canning, because they have all been canning for years. There's no shortage of pressure canners because everyone always had a pressure canner on the shelf. It’s the metal parts that are probably the worst of the problem. I don’t bother with any jars under a quart and it’s hard to shop them from home because of high shipping costs. I’ve been lucky to find some from grocery home delivery but only the originals and only once. The wide mouth beginner jars are always out. I got my jars and lids from uline.com Prices are up, but they are available for delivery. Darth, like I keep saying, Uline’s shipping cost is over the moon. Oops! I have put in relatively large orders in the hundreds of dollars, so maybe that is why I have not noticed the shipping charges. I used them for 7 gallon buckets with gamma lids. Super convenient. I use them for flour, corn meal, different kinds of beans, sugar, and even coffee beans. They DO deliver fast. I live near Houston and they have a warehouse near Dallas, IIRC. |

My indoor stove is so low model. Decent but not for that :) I appreciate the reminder. And fuck.... reading Stu’s post.... not feeling the good guy alien thing. But it does match up to my many missing from my community. I just looked things up and you won’t need a 14” induction hub. Mine is a little over 10” and works great with my 28 qt pressure cooker so should work fine with the same sized pressure canner. I bought mine, a Volrath, at Webstaurant store 10 years ago. They will help you pick one to suit your needs. Induction cooking won’t heat up your home, is energy efficient, and Since mine is portable and only weighs about 6 or 7 pounds I can cook anywhere. Fully loaded, hot pressure canners can be very heavy. It will be nice to just do it on the floor, lol. Also, you can use your pressure canner to pressure cook! You can even stack things in pans and pressure cook a three course meal at once if you want to. They are big, though, so take up some space. Still have more room :) Thanks for the advice. I canned via hot water bath for jars and lids. Never the whole complete jar. So this is new. And the method I used was passed down over a minimum of 6 generations. I was blessed to watch my great grandparents as a kid .... while I didn’t take notes, I can still see everything they did. The first time that I did my own canning was from those memories. I used a recipe for the making of the sweet pickles, but actual canning..... straight from memory. I went looking for the free Ball Canning Book and found that they have a promotion on lids: [link to ball-officialstore.com (secure)] And of course you can download the book: [link to www.pinterest.com (secure)] A lot of you sound like seasoned veterans of canning. I have NEVER actually done it. However, I DID buy an All American and a few cases of jars plus extra lids in case we lose electricity for an extended time. I have both a wood stove and outdoor kitchen that uses propane burners. The Queen decreed it! The closest I ever got to canning was preserving 6 gallons of molasses. Heated the jars in the oven to 250F for an hour. Heated the molasses in a big soup pot on the stove until it boiled. Poured into the hot jars and put on the lids. That was in 2009 and I am still using the original order of molasses to bake bread. No mold or other problems. Was getting low so I got another 6 gallon bucket of molasses in July. |
