modern machinery helps harvest MORE land per person but not produce more per acre. with a tractor,a man can do the work of more men. but that 1 man can not make the land do more. actually the AMISH, i believe this is based on those near Lancaster,PA, can produce more food per acre than modern man with machines.


as for my #'s being wrong. i did say i went by the poster aboves #'s.it was too early to look all the info up. how much of land is in disaster zones such as arctic,hurricans,forest fires, tornado alleys,near the super volcanoes,etc? so yeah the true # of how many the earth can sustain is lower.

The worst year I remember is when the squirrels were jamming nuts into spaces between tree trunks and their branches - about eight feet up.

Even with crops that still only produce one ear per stalk, those ears are larger, resulting in more corn-based products per crop.

However, I will agree with you that this is only sustainable through modern technology that allows massive fields to be harvested in a short period of time and for the resulting produce to be moved in bulk to the consumer. If we lose transportation, it doesn't matter how big a yield the crops produce, most of it will rot in the field before it can be harvested.

RIFF,i remember reading the info i have decades ago and it was probably printed in the 70's. maybe things are better now. but my understanding is the machinery has more losses than an AMISH person would have by himself.

as a kid i would go out to the cornfield and scarf feed bags full of corn the machines missed and fed rabbits thru winters. as the tractor went round corners it knocked down more than it picked. another thing machines can not do is harvest as the crop matures. if u grow a garden u will see that not all are ready at the same time.these facts will give the AMISH the edge.

u mention advancements to corn. however most of this corn is used to feed livestock.over time.,the AMISH have been in LANCASTER for 100's of years, they would have chosen the best seeds from the best plants. therefore compensating for the advancements to pest controls. there rotation of crops,soe taught by the INDIANS, and use of animal fertilizer would comensate for the chemical use now.

if u go back to what happened with our crop growing of cotton and tobacco, u will see that white man does stupid ag practices. we burn up nutrients in the soil by replanting the same crops each year. have we learned much? we still do this today hence the need for more chemicals.ths also causes errosion and less topsoil year to year. the AMISH ways build soil over time. u and i can not replicate what they do next year. it takes years to build the quality of soil and generations to develop the seeds they have.

Humor break and a true story:

in a post-SHTF,we are screwed. CANADIAN PREPPER points this out in 1 of his series of videos. our ways<modern white man> work against ourselves. due to the need for chemicals and GMO or hybrid engineered seeds, our plants will not produce as well under natures rules. 2nd the crops are engineered to resist pests. this has done to pests what we have done to bacteria. the pests are getting immune to simpler tactics.


in a post-SHTF,these pests will b harder to control without more chemicals and hybridization of the seeds. so the seeds we collect will not b as helpful to resist disease or pests but actually will work completely the opposite and cause more losses.

it is sad and stupid that since the 70's we knew better. but we have made the situations much worse. we knew to stop polluting the land,to rotate crops,that we are in fact Mother Natures greatest enenmy.


it will take us 100 years to fix the mess.generations need to b taught new ideas,many of which are old ideas.we will have to undo bad habits. and build soils back up.

i do think we can take lessons from the INDIANS,AMISH, and add modern tech to it and b better off. where that balance is is debatable. but take the best of several worlds and roll them into 1.a greed driven, corruopt society is not ready for that yet.

a community based society will work much better than the dictatorial from the FED down that we have now. if 1 should live as a king so should all.
