Straw hay bales are an excellent way to add nitrogen to soils.Till it in right before winter for next spring planting. Quoting: Nefarious Libertine I am doing something similar, but not per a plan. When I put out round bales for the cows and horse, I put each one in an area that I want to plant later. The cows lay on the hay while adding manure and urine. They spoil a portion of every bale I buy. However, it it pretty easy to spread the ruined hay with the front end loader blade and then plow it in. Like I said earlier, livestock really help with the gardening. Synergy! Once again, thanks for the great suggestions. |

While I am not an expert, I was an aerospace engineer working on defense projects where I was briefed on EMP. You can create the equivalent of EMP locally by hitting power transmission cables with a device powered by conventional explosives. A reasonable amount of explosive can shut down a sector of a grid. However, large areas to EMP can only be performed with nukes. Launching nukes for anything can rapidly escalate to all out thermonukey war. Even the Norks know that is suicidal. Sooo, I don't worry about EMP much. Cyber attacks, physical attacks on substations, cutting down towers, etc. are far more feasible. If something like that happened now, I think the fedgov would suspect Pantifa before the Chicoms. The thing I always was most concerned about was a stealthy bio attack. Perhaps that is what we are going through? The primary hypothesis at this time seems to be: Chicom lab was trying to make deadly bugs, perhaps stealthy ones. Bugs escaped. Chicoms realized that they had screwed up and decided to share their doom with everyone on the planet. A stupid decision in the long run. No one will have sympathy for them. Defectors will eventually tell the truth. Chicom propaganda machine will spin its wheels trying to blame anyone but themselves. I worry less about war with China right now. Biggest thing my land needs is SAND or something to improve permeability. Its "black gumbo" clay and the clay subsoil is only about a foot down. Actually, its crappy soil, but we persevere. The best dirt I ever had in Texas was in base housing, because of the weekly yard inspections our beds had to be perfect. When we moved out to the country, I thought we would have good dirt because the previous owners had lots of horses and FHA animals. Nope, to much urine and not enough manure. To make it worse it was all caliche. For you poor, underprivileged people that were never in west Texas, that stuff is harder than diamonds when dry and slippery than snot when wet. It'll suck you in like quick sand when the monsoon season sets in. Your tools better be knife sharp when you start and you'll be sharpening again before you're done. I had some good results mixing the beds with peat moss to soften it up, but the stuff has gotten really expensive since then. If you have, or can get, some rotten straw, after you're done with a section, dig it in real well. The more the better. Let it sit til spring to compost in. You can add your hot manure at the same time, just give it a season off. The straw really helped me break up the caliche, it should work on your clay. Another thing my folks swore by, is manure tea around the plants. I had to go to my neighbor to get the cow patties, but you already have them. Put one or two in a five gallon bucket and fill with water. Let it sit out in the sun for a day or two and then pour it around your plants. It's the best stuff! Be careful with tobacco near your tomato plants, though. Tomatoes don't like it. Things I have used to improve my clay: 1. Hugulkultur. Dug trenches 4 feet wide, 18 inches deep, and up to 100 feet long. Filled with rotten logs, brush, wood chips, and whatever came to hand. Manure would have been good, but did not have it. Buried a dead dog, a couple of cows, and a load of fish from a freezer that died. 2. Added ag lime, gypsum which is reputed to break up clay, NPK fertilizer, and wood chips. The NPK is to help break down the chips. 3. Daikon radishes. Did not get a crop because the cows ate the tops, but they are reputed to break up clay by sending down big tap roots that later decompose. Best strategy seems to be planting low demand veggies such as okra, sunflowers, melons, etc. I only add the purchased soil in the hole where I plant the high demand veggies. Dang! That is some TOUGH clay! I don't know about the dead dog and the cows, but everything should've helped! I used most of it, too! LoL I've got nothing else, except keep at it. Maybe call Neil Sperry's (sp?) radio show this weekend and ask him. He's the guy that wrote The Texas Gardener. I think that's the name. The old book has a cowboy boot on the cover. He's very good. The only other solution is too expensive and probably not very smart. Dig out the old and replace it all with new. Not a good solution, I know. How long have you been gardening in that spot? I don't have that book, but I have read quite a bit on how to improve clay soil. Some experts say just that, "Dig it out and haul in good soil". I did that partially with 21 cubic yards of garden soil I purchased last Spring as one of my first preps. It helped, but it was not enough for the garden I wanted. Used it sparingly around my plants and in holes that I planted. I have tried sand, but like someone commented, it has to be coarse sand. That stuff is expensive too. Wood chips helped...until they decomposed. But I am wary of putting too much carbon in the soil and not enough nitrogen to decompose it. My BEST soil is where my chicken yard was for over 4 years. I did not put sand in there, but somehow sand IS there. I think they add sand to the laying mash to help digest food. The problem with the chicken yard is that it has big oak and pecan trees shading most of it. We grew some great veggies on the portion that got sun. However, when the leaves fall, that area that was shaded can be planted to winter veggies such as turnips and beets. Long term solution is to keep adding compost and wood chips while running chickens and cows on the land. They prepare it better than I can. |

P13315 I mentioned earlier in the thread the plan that I think is tried and true for you gardeners: My Grandma raised and fed 6 kids off about one half acre. She rotated chickens and ducks on three fenced yards. Planted two while the birds cleaned and fertilized the other. I don't think she EVER bought fertilizer nor did she buy much chicken feed. She grew sunflowers which she dried and fed to her birds along with waste vegetables and such. No tractor or tiller, hand tools only. She had a milk cow as well in a rented pasture three miles away. She walked there and back twice a day carrying the milk home. That's walking TWELVE MILES every day, rain or shine, in the Texas heat and cold in Winter. She weighed about 110 lbs. soaking wet but had endless energy. What women we descend from! |

Like I said before, you can dig it in with your manure over the winter. The more old straw you can get in there, the better. Like Nef said, it'll break down. Only thing is, you're going to have to keep mixing in straw in the dirt for a long time to break that clay up. About the only advice other Texans gave me when I started, was amend, amend, amend. They said I would always have to keep doing it. "Horseshit!" I started a garden plot in Texas a few years back... Outside of town on the SW side was a horse farm that advertised "free horse manure". It turned out to be several years old and mixed in with composted straw and sawdust. I used a lot of this in my compost pile and spread on the garden. It was like Jack and the giant beanstalk. I set up the drip irrigation system to water at the same time every day. |
