Yes, many of my neighbors use raised beds with trucked in soil. I have tried that as well. However, the garden areas are too small for my goals.

I have five acres and am negotiating to buy an adjoining five more.

This year I had about 4,400 square feet planted to garden vegetables. Most of it either failed to come up, was choked by weeds, or the bugs killed it. We STILL harvested enough to have frozen veggies through the Winter.

Part of the problem was the workload. I plowed and planted but did not have the hours in the day to maintain it, e.g., weeding and spraying bugs. Seems I was continually engaged in new projects.

Plus, at 70 plus years, I just cannot handle the summer heat like I used to. Lots of resting and hydrating required.

Like I have said, I am a rank amateur compared to many.

I am not striving for total self sufficiency in all areas. I do not expect our entire civ to implode. We are just too resilient and innovative for that.

However, my goal is to create as much food as I can on my land to feed my large family, neighbors, and the needy if required.

BTW, I am familiar with Dowding although I have not read his books. I have become a fan of Steve Solomon and his book, Gardening When It Counts, which is more aligned to being a prepper with limited resources.

Steve would counsel me to stick with low demand veggies and plant them farther apart so each plant has more nutrients and water available to it with less competition.

I have been at this for three summers now improving my land and trying different methods.

I think I have a better handle on it now, but I need to plan better for the next time I plant.

I have a yard of about 1500 square feet that my geese occupied for the past year. Nice nutrients in that soil. Will plant it to winter veggies.

The part of the old chicken yard that is shaded by trees can be planted as the leaves are falling.

This winter I plan to cut down about six oak trees that shade that old chicken yard. They are either small or diseased. Firewood.

For those who are thinking this pandemic is a long term event, perhaps it is time to move farther out where you can have some land.

I moved here because there are few restrictions in terms of land use and it was close enough to commute to work in Houston.

Would be real nice of them if they also took precautions to help protect their workers...like mandating masks, social distancing, and disinfecting hard surfaces and the work area

Are these things inconvenient? Yes, they are.

Is there an issue of the greater good that needs consideration? I'm of the opinion, and that's all it is, one person's opinion, that what makes us a civilized society is a willingness to serve the greater good when it's the moral thing to do.

I don't even think it's as much the schools... they're surely going to lead to an increase but I think it's too early. We've had a lot of data now that shows it takes at least a month or even a month and a half for any change in the situation on the ground for it to show up in the daily numbers.

New England had a bad outbreak, then TX-FL-CA-GA-AZ had a bad outbreak, now everyone else is on the upswing.
