Hmm 122k upto Aug 1st, at which point they had recorded 46k official covid deaths. Not sure how much reporting lag there is in Mexico, but that would mean a ~200% under count of deaths if we exclude other factors. If we account for overburdened healthcare etc that might put them slightly lower but not a whole lot.

They currently record ~20k deaths per month, so move that up to 40-60k easily, puts them at ~1.3-2k daily deaths since beginning of June.

Pretty severe bump up from other countries I've looked at, depending on recording standards the under count in the west is 25-75% with some exceptions.

ETA: This puts mexico in the 6-24 (2%-.5% mortality rate) million cases, where I would expect it to be 6-12m (2-1%) based on healthcare availability etc. Population is about 126m, cases reported total ~640k so roughly 1:10 to 1:40 cases are reported with 5-20% of population infected.

One of the reasons I hate these studies is their ambiguity in definitions:

Those reporting fever with or without respiratory symptoms in the previous two months were categorized as symptomatic.

Of the total 166 participants who tested positive, only 9 (5.4%) gave a history of any symptoms

So do we carry the prior definition of symptoms as being fever with or without respiratory symptoms? Also note that in the article this is hardly mentioned because of the above numbers. We are talking about a study of n=2000 selected from 406 households where 166 tested positive for antibodies in a city of 15 million, extrapolating the results is ridiculous.

What is telling given these conditions, in that they tested whole households, is that they found: Seroprevalence in children was not different from that seen in adults and elderly. ... Our study found that children might be infected at a rate similar to adults. This may be due to the household nature of our survey during school closure, where we were powered better for the pediatric population compared to other studies.

Given the lack of clarity of what they deemed to be symptomatic and asymptomatic in the actual study the article is pretty sensationalized but that is normal these days. No real 'strong' conclusions here.

I would not discount the actual complexity of the virus which is about three times the common flu and has to include the RNA sequence that fixates iron oxide from hemoglobin to effect lethality , AND teh effects of this complex replication at higher altitudes.. if pakistan is different that may be why.

also anecdotal quinine and zinc use in low dose creates cellular chemical environment that inhibits to a large degree THIS COMPLEX , COMPLETE, REPLICATION , Need to make this Virus Lethal.. Get rid if that sequence , and it is non lethal..

Depends on how you define extreme... their death rate is lower than the UK, Belgium, Spain, Italy, USA, and only a bit higher than France.

33 countries have a higher case rate per million population.

Are there places that did better? Sure... but there's a lot that did worse.

The question is... on a long enough timeline will all nations end up with a similar case rate unless they go full New Zealand and place the entire country under house arrest every time they find a single case?

My guess would be yes unless there's an effective vaccine.

Zeph was 9 months old. We were in Safeway, in Arizona. The beanie dog was on the clearance shelf. So I told little man we would check the price.

We get to check out and the dog is outside my budget. I promised him that we would come back, on payday. And I apologized to him.

I start to pay and the clerk starts handing the doggie to Zeph. I tel, the clerk, I am sorry, but we can’t buy it today. There is a manager standing there, and he says that it’s a gift from them..... I hold myself together as I hand the dog to Zeph.....

This little man who has said not a single word, but signs and nods or shakes his head while understanding thousands of words.....

“Doggie!!!” The whole store heard him. It was damn cute. And that doggie is sitting on his table as I type this.
