"Alert fatigue" is a real phenomenon, even among those who are trained for it. More than once over the past month I've caught myself becoming complacent about protocols, and I have to remind myself that the threat is still real.

Sometimes when Raffette and I would be eating at one of our favorite restaurants I would look up at her, smile, and say, "I'm going to miss this," meaning when the apocalypse happens.

I was right.

But you have all the voices to keep you company...

Well, the good news is the school is receiving their full tuition and housing fees. So they got that going for them, which is nice.

So, the mask mandate occurred at the end of May and the sudden spike in cases began in mid-July. Yep, that's a causal relationship if ever I saw one.

"Are you scared yet, human?"

Damn skippy I am. Fucking terrified.

My sisters school, James Madison has over 1,000 cases. They went to online only, and are kicking everyone out of all on campus housing and sending them all home to their hometowns.

They got their tuition though.


Now we will have 1,000 asymptomatic kids flying around the country back to their hometowns and families.

I got some bad news tonight. My friend (in LA) has a daughter who got quite sick in March. Girl was in perfect health, an athlete on two dance teams, and is in high school. Since testing wasn't yet available in sufficient quantities, the daughter quarantined away from her family, at her boyfriend's house, as he was sick too. She didn't have the opportunity to be tested at the time, but they were hoping it was just a bad flu. As the months wore on, they started really suspecting it was COVID.

The daughter just got her antibody test back, and it's positive. She appears to be a long-hauler -- she's not nearly recovered, even now. She went from being an active person all around as well as an athlete, to needing to sleep nearly all day,every day. She's having trouble keeping up in classes ( she was previously a straight-A student), she now has trouble concentrating, and her personality has apparently changed a great deal. This was one of the happiest, healthiest (and most adored) kids ever.... and this just breaks my heart.

It's felt extremely apocalyptic here today, what with the orange sky and all.... though I did have a good hearty laugh at the "this is fine" plushy dog tweet that was posted earlier in the thread. The sky really did look like that here -- it was orange early in the day, and had devolved to an ochre sort of color by afternoon. I've had a bad headache, nausea, and dizziness for several days, which is probably from the smoke. It happened the last time the smoke was this bad, too.

I'm so glad I spent the money on my aerogardens! The one thing I was really concerned about, food wise, was fresh veggies (which is a big part of my diet, in an ideal world). I'm pretty well set for staples, but produce was a worry. Now, I have a bunch of rapidly growing heads of various lettuces, happy little tomato plants, and a rich harvest of sprouts (and a fair back stock of seeds). My herbs are also sprouting, now -- my basil looks good, and my mint is shaping up. I didn't realize that it was possible to grow veggies this well indoors. Every cent I spent on the aerogardens was worth it ... I will be happily munching on fresh veggies in the dead of winter, without needing to set foot in a store, so long as the power doesn't go out for long periods of time. If it does, I have a fair amount of canned goods... but for now, I am thrilled to have some measure of food self sufficiency. I'm already enojoying the sprouts, and will have salad greens reasonably soon. I had no idea how fast lettuce grows! (I've never had a garden before, so I am learning as I go.)

I'm also very glad to be a small human, who is accustomed to fasting regularly and eating simply when I do eat. One can stretch food out much longer that way. I'm half considering buying an additional small freezer for the house, though I think I might be better off just focusing on non-perishables. I've blown through most of what savings I had, but I think I did a pretty good job of making that go a long way in terms of survival.

Love and thanks to all of you! Thanks to you lovely people, I am much more prepared to cope with all these crises as they happen. I'm a bit late to the prepping game, but I think I've done a pretty good job with what I have to work with.

I'm so sorry about your friend's daughter. Hopefully she'll start to slowly get better. I follow a survivor/long hauler group on Facebook (yeah, i know) and it seems some are starting to feel "normal" again after 6 months and are returning to their normal activities. There is hope, just takes a while for some people.

I like your word better. They had a silly name for it on the Tarmac .... it’s when the dumb dumb accidents would occur.

8 months....... that’s longer than a stint on an aircraft carrier. But with less cramped quarters. And no general quarters drills. So perspective can help keep sanity too.

My latest friend to test positive is now on day 9. He text me 2 days ago saying he gets dizzy when he stands up and now has almost continuous diarrhea. He's a mid-30's, fit fire fighter, former athlete.

My son's friend was sent home from Samford University when he tested positive. He is on the football team there and they had an outbreak. He is on the mend.

All of my/son's other friends who have had it are 100% back to normal. Ages from 20-46.

We pray and hope it doesn’t happen, but being prepared is half the battle. At least others are crammed in for holiday shopping, we can stay cozy and relatively safe at home.

Follow ups! Make sure at 12 months they get a blood work up for potential cancer.

I think this is what really irks me is all the uninsured that should be given continuing follow ups every six months. And even the insured aren’t being followed properly.
