we kill each other and spend more $$ to do that than on researching a killer virus. we worked for over 100 years to torture our elderly just so we can think we made them live longer. we KNOW better but still pollute the environment. with all the modern machines, ppl still starve every day on this planet. the rich have bunkers that look like cities,yet the poor are lucky if they have a cardboard box and can or food. we elect leaders that nobody trusts.

Same here. If there was a way to prove it I’d put everything on a bet that its what we had. The worrying thing, when it’s not supposed to affect the age group, is that my teen daughter was the most ill out of all of us. 70+ year olds included. She hardly ever gets ill and hasn’t seen a dr since she was 4 years old.

I check this thread every day for new info on the virus, and the news.

Maybe you should consider trimming back on the insults, arrogance, and minimalization of those who don't spend their entire lives on the thread.

It's possible, but actually proving it is not really in anybody's interest at the moment. We saw the first recorded cases in the west late January, but it seems like most of these could be linked directly to china and most where of the 614D variant. Mid February we started to see increased community spread that we now associate with the 614G variant. The specific mutation. The only know difference between the two strains is it's in vitro virulence, in the lab 614G is more contagious. In China 614D has remained the dominant variant but the 614G mutation was found in the west and in china around the same time, making it hard to assess where it came from as travel was still pretty free at the time.

We did not really see reports coming out of China till the start of the new year, I would need to do some digging to refresh my memory but around the 4th of Jan it was isolated and made public shorty after "by accident". The irony is that at this time it was already widespread in the community and only after this time could a actual test for the virus be developed. Officially recorded cases pretty much from this point on required a test to be deemed so. This creates ambiguity, it was first noticed during fly season and was/is hard to distinguish from the flu without testing for the presence of the actual virus. That said there has been reluctance to test older samples (some from that time are kept frozen, others are degrading 6 feet under).

So why is there a general reluctance? There are a few I can think of but it's hard to prove anything. The main reason being it is easy to assume there would be no incentive for the Chinese to prove it was in China earlier. Politically China would be all over not being patient zero, it works as a propaganda tool in that they could claim victim status and then boast about being the first to "find" it thus making them scientifically superior. That even though it's highly likely that even if we shift the timeline it's most likely to have been in china much earlier because it reached a critical mass there sooner.

Just purely going by the timeline and what we know it would be safe to assume that the initial spread in Wuhan started some time around Nov/Dec. With a bit of imagination we could extend it to Sept/Oct. This would all be assuming this actually started in Wuhan, of which I am not convinced. It seems more likely to me that if there was a zoological nature it would have come from someplace else in china and was then imported from a more rural area, where it would have gone unnoticed, and spread into Wuhan where it reached a sufficient population to be registered as a anomaly. This latter option could extend the timeline by another couple of months and would allow for it to spread internationally in a limited fashion without ever really raising red flags.

That said though I doubt it was widespread in the US in Nov/Dec. If we were to dig through all the data and try to actually find the evidence we are likely to find some cases but not anything significant. There was a pretty bad flu going around at the time and in initial stages and mild cases (clinically mild, your worst flu ever was most likely clinically insignificant) the two are hard to distinguish. It's tempting to throw in the vaping story from back then but that was over-hyped at the behest of big tobacco, a growing unregulated market makes people throw things into their products that are cheaper for short term production but bad for maintaining a consumer base.
