BTW, I have tried a modified hugulkultur here in Brazoria County. We have only about 16 inches of clay topsoil which has ZERO nutrients per my testing for NPK.

Below the topsoil is red clay that is like concrete.

I dug trenches 18 inches deep, 4 feet wide, and 100 feet long with my backhoe. Then I fill with rotten logs, brush, and wood chips. Mixed the topsoil with wood chips and fertilizer before mounding it up over the trench.

Worked fairly well, but I cannot use my tractor mounted tiller on it. The tractor wheels sink in the trench and the tiller tines would hit the logs. The clay on top turns to dust, mud, or concrete depending on the weather.

I have a better method now:

1. Fence cows, geese, and ducks into the planned garden area for a few months. They eat all vegetation while spreading manure and decomposed hay. They waste about 20% of each round bale by turning it into manure-soaked compost.

2. Use the backhoe to turn over the soil. Remove roots. VERY important since roots will break the shear pins on the tiller.

3. Spread fertilizer and water heavily. Cover with a tarp, old carpet, or whatever. All the weeds and grass will die.

4. Till again.

5. Plant seeds.

Seems like a lot of work, but it turns crap soil into something I can grow vegetables in.

Lessons learned:

1. Having some land is important, but you don't need that much to be mostly self-sufficient. My Grandma fed a family of 8 through the Great Depression on one half acre of gardens and chickens with a milk cow.

I am aiming for production beyond simple self sufficiency.

2. Using livestock like a cow and chickens greatly improves your soil. Even if you don't have enough pasture for a cow, you can buy feed and hay. You will still come out ahead.

3. To go beyond self sufficiency, you need a TRACTOR. A tractor and implements means that you can do so much more. If I had to choose between a tractor and more land, I would rather own the tractor. A good tractor and set of implements costs less than a new pickup truck.

Sorry for the off-topic excursion, but my contribution is survival and self sufficiency. Depending on where the pandemic goes, this info could be useful to survive.

Let me add some important criteria to what dyin said:
There has to be a viable, safe, and thoroughly tested vaccine that works on all strains of Covid for this to work.

As of right now, there are no vaccines meeting those requirements. Not saying there won't be; but it will be next summer at the absolute earliest, and even then we're bypassing testing for unforeseen long-term side effects.

My thinking is that the numbers only increase from here until there are lockdowns.

If it were me, and I needed to go for imaging etc in order to advance the process I would go. My dad has a lot of appointments that he has to go to at various facilities (hospitals, personal doc, imaging) and they have all been very careful

But that’s just me and my 2 cents.
