I am just heartsick, to the core, looking at these last few posts. One of my dearest friends (he's actaully my ex-husband, whom I will always love and vice versa -- we just married way too young) is stuck in the UK ... he and his wife went to care for her ailing mother, and now they can't return home to the Netherlands.

CA is getting creamed... and my heart just aches for all the healthcare workers who are dealing with this day in/day out, and still having more and more patients, largely because humans refuse to behave themselves and make some damned sacrifices for the good of everyone around them.

On a lighter note, it's true about the vegan section. When I did my last real grocery shopping in person (back in March), the shelves were pretty damned bare, with the exception of the vegan section, which was still full.

Since I'm a longstanding vegan, that suits me just fine ...

Interesting... so will people who have already had the current vac need to take this as well?

This could mean that we get into a never ending cycle of repeated covid vacs. Every year like the flu one?

Yep, that was always likely to be the endgame... trying to keep up with the mutations.

The question is, will a vaccine variant that's created in six weeks also be tested before being rolled out?

Yes and maybe. If the current vaccine doesn't protect against this new variant a new vaccine would be needed. With the mRNA vac's that's a quick fix though, just have to change out the sequence to the new one.

Whether repeated vaccination is required is still a open question even with the new mutation, we don't have the data to call it either way. Though the likelihood of requiring repeated vaccination is high given the fact natural antibodies seem to degrade.

Testing a new variant of the vax isn't required per se. All given what would need to be to be changed is just the mRNA sequence. If they bog that up it would just result in the creation of useless proteins.

If changing out the mRNA (Pfizer/Biotech and Moderna Vac's) would create new side-effects that the current one does not we have way bigger problems with the new tech. So no new Phase 3 trail (the long one) would be needed just a quick Phase 1/2 to show it actually creates the antibodies required and doesn't kill you instantly.

But at what point does it all become pointless.

The French government intends to pass law that if people refuse vaccination they will have restrictions placed on them. Restrictions on their public transport use, restrictions on their access to sites/places/areas. Protests are due to take part in front of the Assemblée National in Paris tonight against this.

They said on the news today that the US is keeping the flights to UK going because they feel confident the vaccine will be effective against it.

I agree with the French, it's seriously time to turn on the screw, otherwise we'll have this virus around for a very long time.

Good morning! Checking in from MS. Our positive numbers and hospitalizations are up, but I feel we are going to peak and drop a little before January. Most of our Covid pts are not requiring ICU at the moment. The ICU's and medsurg units are still overflowing with non-Covid pts.

We started vaccinating employees last week. At first we only allowed true frontline employees (Direct contact with Covid/PUI's) to receive one, but due to lack of interest it is now open to every hospital employee. I'm still waiting until people receive the 2nd dose to even begin to think seriously about receiving one. I'm afraid hospitals will require us to have one or not be hired/retained. I don't see that happening for another year so I still have some time :). So far my friends who have gotten the vaccine are doing fine. Zero side effects at the moment. I keep telling them to be prepared for the 2nd shot as that seems to be when the side effects pop up.

I'll be honest with y'all, I haven't been here in a while because I can't deal with the constant doom both in person and online. I see first hand how this virus effects people and more people are surviving and doing fine than in the spring. Will some people have permanent damage? Yes. Will some people have issues for months after and then do fine? Yes. Will some people recover and have no issues? Yes. I've done my own surveys of friends and coworkers who have had Covid and only one out of 43 still has issues with her smell/taste 5 months later. All of the other ones have recovered with no issues. Ages range from 22-60.

I understand this thread is about discussing Covid, but you have to listen to people with differing opinions and who present differing facts. I can tell you first person account of what is happening at my hospital and be called a shill or hoaxer because it isn't all doom and death. Treatments are better and people are surviving. 99.5% of every single person who has died at my hospital had either DM, HTN, ESRD, CAD, Obesity, previously diagnosed cancer and other chronic medical conditions.

It's easy to get wrapped up in the negative, but you have to look at some positive things or you will begin to wonder why life is even worth living. I started to fall into the latter category and that's why I had to take an extended break from GLP. It started to negatively affect my mental health and caused me to start making some irrational decisions based on fear. Yes, keep a healthy fear of Covid and do everything in your power to avoid catching it, but balance life with the "what ifs" so you can enjoy the time you have on Earth.

Heya TH! Good to see you again. I tend to agree with most of what you are saying. Fear itself is a health concern.

I still wonder about the long term effects of both covid and the vaccine, neither is really clear. Looking at only the outward symptoms in those around you can be deceiving though. We all tend to mostly younger people and the actual damage done internally tends to be obfuscated by bad self-reporting and a desire to be seen as recovered.

It's funny how the long-term effects of covid tend to get disregarded/minimized whilst a fear of possible long-term effects of the vaccine tend to get used to avoid it though.

I don't see how any health care system could keep up with the constant need for repeated vacs, especially if more than one dose is needed.

How long before this comes in pill form?

Okay luggage story.....

So when I was a kid my life was weird. Going back and forth between parent and grandparents. The last time that I was with my parent... we were in a foreign country and she was coming apart at the seams.

She decided at 4pm that we would be on the next MAC flight outta there. And packed our shit into duffel bags. I just shook my head. At nine, I could already see what was coming. So in my little carry on..... I did me.

Sure enough, 12 hours later...... a pile of 300 duffel bags were loaded onto a truck. And while the GI’s had zero patience for her....they saw me standing off to the side. Minimum 30 of them.... they walked past and either hugged me or gave me some good words.

We didn’t see those duffels until 6 weeks later, in the 4th state we were visiting family.

I can still see the plane and the flashing lights. I do miss tarmacs.
