"The virus will stay with us for the next 10 years. We need to get used to the fact there’ll be more outbreaks.” says the CEO of BioNTech, the company who came up with the first vaccine (with Pfizer).

10 years huh?

Wonder what information he has to base that statement on. Is it because that's how long it really takes to have any hope to develop a true vaccine?

Or is that the average time frame for a virus to stabilize into final form so to speak?

So many questions.

Good morning! Checking in from MS. Our positive numbers and hospitalizations are up, but I feel we are going to peak and drop a little before January. Most of our Covid pts are not requiring ICU at the moment. The ICU's and medsurg units are still overflowing with non-Covid pts.

We started vaccinating employees last week. At first we only allowed true frontline employees (Direct contact with Covid/PUI's) to receive one, but due to lack of interest it is now open to every hospital employee. I'm still waiting until people receive the 2nd dose to even begin to think seriously about receiving one. I'm afraid hospitals will require us to have one or not be hired/retained. I don't see that happening for another year so I still have some time :). So far my friends who have gotten the vaccine are doing fine. Zero side effects at the moment. I keep telling them to be prepared for the 2nd shot as that seems to be when the side effects pop up.

I'll be honest with y'all, I haven't been here in a while because I can't deal with the constant doom both in person and online. I see first hand how this virus effects people and more people are surviving and doing fine than in the spring. Will some people have permanent damage? Yes. Will some people have issues for months after and then do fine? Yes. Will some people recover and have no issues? Yes. I've done my own surveys of friends and coworkers who have had Covid and only one out of 43 still has issues with her smell/taste 5 months later. All of the other ones have recovered with no issues. Ages range from 22-60.

I understand this thread is about discussing Covid, but you have to listen to people with differing opinions and who present differing facts. I can tell you first person account of what is happening at my hospital and be called a shill or hoaxer because it isn't all doom and death. Treatments are better and people are surviving. 99.5% of every single person who has died at my hospital had either DM, HTN, ESRD, CAD, Obesity, previously diagnosed cancer and other chronic medical conditions.

It's easy to get wrapped up in the negative, but you have to look at some positive things or you will begin to wonder why life is even worth living. I started to fall into the latter category and that's why I had to take an extended break from GLP. It started to negatively affect my mental health and caused me to start making some irrational decisions based on fear. Yes, keep a healthy fear of Covid and do everything in your power to avoid catching it, but balance life with the "what ifs" so you can enjoy the time you have on Earth.

I read this opinion piece on teachers and COVID earlier, and I just had to roll over and shut everything out for a while. The piece is stating that teachers need respect and protection from this pandemic, but some of the quoted comments from an angry public who want to reopen schools really hit me hard -- things like, "if you're that afraid, don't teach, LOSERS"

We get pretty tired of the abuse that is heaped on us, particularly when it goes as far as to treat our lives as totally expendable.

My heart is just broken after reading so many of these posts the past few days. Riff, I can’t even imagine. The silence in my heart holds your words as a center of gravitational pull—I simply cannot comprehend loss and pain like this.

So many posts here the past few days remind me of the loss we are all experiencing. I do not mean at all to diminish the grief of those who are truly grieving—it just strikes me that we have collectively been losing things (people, experiences, moments, rights of passage, etc.), and collectively we have been grieving as we go this past year.

We are all just coming from or heading to a funeral of sorts. Sorry to be a bit dark—I think what I’m trying to say is I’m thankful for all your company in this. Walking in each other home. Keep your heads up, all.

World’s Longest Virus-Free Streak Ends With New Taiwan Case

The first locally transmitted case of Covid-19 in more than eight months was reported in Taiwan, ending what was the world’s longest stretch without a domestic infection and providing a reminder of the virus’s ability to outfox even the most successful efforts to contain it.

Heya TH! Good to see you again. I tend to agree with most of what you are saying. Fear itself is a health concern.

I still wonder about the long term effects of both covid and the vaccine, neither is really clear. Looking at only the outward symptoms in those around you can be deceiving though. We all tend to mostly younger people and the actual damage done internally tends to be obfuscated by bad self-reporting and a desire to be seen as recovered.

It's funny how the long-term effects of covid tend to get disregarded/minimized whilst a fear of possible long-term effects of the vaccine tend to get used to avoid it though.

Stay safe, TH!

My heart hurts just thinking about the building research from assumptions we reached in Spring. And this article is from September.

I swear I didn’t read past the first paragraph, but I could still write the article.... unfortunately.

What COVID-19 is doing to the heart, even after recovery

Less than 50%

“A growing number of studies suggest many COVID-19 survivors experience some type of heart damage, even if they didn't have underlying heart disease and weren't sick enough to be hospitalized. This latest twist has health care experts worried about a potential increase in heart failure.”

Okay luggage story.....

So when I was a kid my life was weird. Going back and forth between parent and grandparents. The last time that I was with my parent... we were in a foreign country and she was coming apart at the seams.

She decided at 4pm that we would be on the next MAC flight outta there. And packed our shit into duffel bags. I just shook my head. At nine, I could already see what was coming. So in my little carry on..... I did me.

Sure enough, 12 hours later...... a pile of 300 duffel bags were loaded onto a truck. And while the GI’s had zero patience for her....they saw me standing off to the side. Minimum 30 of them.... they walked past and either hugged me or gave me some good words.

We didn’t see those duffels until 6 weeks later, in the 4th state we were visiting family.

I can still see the plane and the flashing lights. I do miss tarmacs.

I was placed for adoption at birth and spent most of the next four years in foster homes.

Adopted in spring, I came with a suitcase that had a couple changes of clothing, one toy, and a couple books.

Figured I'd "made it".

Folks always took a vacation in northern Wisconsin during the summer, rented a cabin for a week. In those days there were no expressways, etc. Traveling 250-300 miles was literally a 7-8 hour adventure so they'd leave at 4 am.

They had the folks they were vacationing with over the night before. Of course my folks had everything packed for the early departure; get up, pack the car, off to vacation.

I spot my suitcase, a brown what they used to call a Gladstone bag.

Every other time I'd seen my suitcase it meant I was being shipped off.

I went apeshit. To this day I can remember crying and asking "what did I do wrong, I'm trying to be good, I'll be good, please, please don't send me away..."

They couldn't figure out what I was on about until I pointed at the suitcase. My mom tried to reassure me by showing me the suitcase she'd packed for her and my dad.

I was unconvinced to say the least, figuring they were simply more clever and accomplished at deceiving kids.

Literally cried myself to sleep. Turned out they were telling the truth.

Got rid of that suitcase as soon as I was able. Kept the books though, still have 'em.

This will not be the first time that "Super-Spreaders," have existed, they are perfecting it now:

[link to www.nationalgeographic.com (secure)]

"Mary Mallon (foreground) didn't show symptoms of typhoid, but spread the disease while working as a cook in the New York City area. She is pictured after having been institutionalized in a hospital on North Brother Island, where she stayed for more than a quarter century."

Then, when more people are really getting sick, they will blame it on the unvaccinated and demand mandatory vaccinations, or else.

It goes in spurts. I try to stay really busy, so I don't have time to remember right now. We've lost 3 parents in 3 years. That doesn't count all the extended family and friends...before Covid. It's just that time of life, I guess. We're lucky we had them all for as long as we did. My grandparents didn't have their parents. They passed before we were born. My mom barely remembered her own grandparents. My dad was a little luckier. His grandmother passed when I was in high school.

Anyway, thanks hon. I really appreciate it. I'm a bit bah humbuggy today. No sun today and it doesn't feel the least like Christmas. The give away thread was fun, but it's over. Is it January yet? I'm ready. I'm going to hibernate.

I haven't "celebrated" Christmas since 1998. My little girl was 5. We never had another Christmas. I hate this time of year with the heat of a thousand suns. And even to this day I can't watch a movie or a TV show involving a man and his daughter without ending up in a fetal position. Some days I can control it better than others, but it never really goes away.

So I get it. When it cuts that deep, feeling nothing is better. You be as humbuggy as you want to be. You don't owe anyone the facade of enjoying the holiday.

I wish you the best, TB. Just wanted you to know I really do understand.

Yep, sos, I could barely type that, the tears were flowing so much. We are here for you, Riff Raff.

Thank you, sos, for your nice words to me last night! I think we will be able to get on a military flight on February 5! Fingers crossed. I will definitely keep everyone updated.

Bastetcat, you always post about five minutes after I go to bed! Thank you so much for your kind comments. I will still be here on GLP....just in a different time zone! You can't get rid of me that easily! "Greenland" was a good doom movie, but it might not be for you.....I think you need to watch funny things!

I love all of you guys more than my luggage. [Steel Magnolias]
