Thanks everyone for your opinions. I'm still going to wait and see what happens. I may get an antibody test and see what it shows. I still swear I had it in late January. Y'all can read back and see my symptoms. The kicker was the loss of taste and smell.

The vets at the Ohio Veteran's Home got their first shot yesterday, too. They said pretty much the same as your friend. A couple mentioned getting drenched with Agent Orange in 'Nam. I'm leaning towards getting vaccinated too, though I have no guarantee that the vax would work on me (many don't, due to my immunocompromised status. I just don't make the antibodies). Who knows if that will be true with mRNA ...?

Our universtiy is talking about going back to in-person classes in the Fall, and possibly even in the Summer. This decision is based on there being a vaccine available now --- but I think it's rushing things. We need time to get everyone vaccinated, and for the immunity to kick in ... and I have doubts that will all be in place, even by Fall. Plus, there is a lot that could happen between now and Sept.

Biden's right -- the worst is still ahead of us. He's simply being truthful about that --- it's going to take time to roll out the vaccines, and the spread is insane at the moment. Hospitals are overwhelmed in a lot of places already. Even with good therapeutics, and assuming the vax works with reasonably few side effects... it won't be instant. People are still traveling for Christmas, and that's only going to cause further surges.

I may ask in advance for a disability accomodation to coninue teaching online, if the virus numbers are still significant. I sorely miss being on campus, but I definitely don't want another chronic illness on top of the one I already have.

Yes, Bell's palsy can be caused by Mono, Lyme, and a number of other things. Viruses can have some pretty nasty neurological effects ... so can certain bacteria.

I admit, I've wondered if CA has the UK variant, or if it really just boils down to behavior, and the fact that we didn't get hit that hard early on (comparitively speaking.) My area has been pretty compliant with the regulations, but that's not true everywhere -- and there are a lot of entitled and selfish people in much of Los Angeles. There are also a lot of essential workers in the southern part of the state, many of whom work and live in cramped quarters, and some of whom cross the border to Mexico legally, regularly for work.

Even the Bay Area's getting hit pretty hard now, though. San Francisco is doing fairly well, but the East Bay and South Bay have seen stark upticks from a few months back. I don't think behavior has changed all that much, from what I've seen.

UK is going back into FULL NATIONAL LOCKDOWN in the New Year. This will be until the vaccine is rolled out.
