I'm flummoxed that even science seems to be surprised that this virus mutates continually. The aim of any organism is to survive, spread and either out-do or at least dominate its competitors.

The fact that there are variants that primarily affect humans and others that seem to afflict only say cats or birds should make it possible that with enough iterations and species interactions something will evolve that is more this or that or less this, that or the other.

I still say this bug was "evolved" unnaturally.

The paper specifically uses vaccine in their (flawed) modelling to show how the jab gives an edge in controllong the spread.

They must be assuming the antibodies from the vax are neutralising-type antibodies.

What if they are not? Would we be creating a whole army of chronically infected people, harboring the virus for a long time, only to have the damn thing mutate again - like it did in that immune-suppressed person (who had it for 101 days)??

Yet another new COVID-19 variant seems to have developed, this one in Nigeria

Another new variant of the coronavirus appears to have emerged in Nigeria, Africa's top public health official said Thursday, but he added that further investigation was needed.

"It's a separate lineage from the U.K. and South Africa," the head of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, John Nkengasong, told reporters.

"Give us some time. ... It's still very early," he said.

The alert about the apparent new variant was based on two or three genetic sequences, he said, but that and South Africa's alert late last week were enough to prompt an emergency meeting of the Africa CDC this week.

Unlike the variant seen in the U.K., "we haven't observed such rapid rise of the lineage in Nigeria and do not have evidence to indicate that the P681H variant is contributing to increased transmission of the virus in Nigeria. However, the relative difference in scale of genomic surveillance in Nigeria vs the U.K. may imply a reduced power to detect such changes," the paper says.

For the first time since confirming sub-Saharan Africa's first virus case in February, Nigeria is in the spotlight during this pandemic as infections surge.

"Over recent weeks, we've had a huge increase in number of samples to (Nigeria CDC) reference lab," the CDC director-general Chikwe Ihekweazu tweeted on Thursday. "This has led to an unusual delay with testing, but we're working around the clock," with many colleagues cutting short their holidays and returning to work.

i counted about 5 as of yesterday. the original Wuhan, wave 2 that was more contagious,UK,BRAZIL,ISRAEL. add 2 more SA,Nigeria. so 7?

verdict seems to point to more contatgious. that could b good or bad. most viruses as they get to be more contagious,are less deadly or harmful. however,this is a Bio-virus.

even if a nation has immunity from 1 version,they would b weakened and any other will spread like wild fire.compounds the death rates and overwhelms the hospitals.

Hers the thing about HERD immunity..... you might achieve it based infection rate, but in the process you have guaranteed shorter lifespans and it is extremely likely (with this virus) that 40% or more of your population is now disabled and a shit ton are going to need oxygen FOR LIFE.

So no.... you cannot achieve a happy go lucking herd immunity with China Psycho Virus.

And historically, viruses have tended to mutate towards less lethality and infectivity, as viruses tend to die off if they kill too many hosts and cannot spread.
