The discussion over the NHS is an interesting one. Ideologically the incumbent government would love to privatise it. But it is well loved in the UK so probably won’t happen. Johnson is a populist and that would lose votes.

Working for a contractor the write off of NHS debt has lead to a building and development boom. It’s like they have a blank cheque to get work done.

If anything they could use the NHS as a driver for growth to mend a battered economy. The feed through into supply chains and wider economy would be significant.

Not directed to lightning1977, but this pisses me off for several reasons.

First off, if my daughter EVER talked to me that way....I can't type the explosion that would occur.

Secondly, the reason the covid threads are ALL slowing down is the over abundance of posts like the one l1977 just found. The majority of the news is crap hopium.

For the people complaining, do some digging and post it. Quit expecting a handout! Maybe you have some different sources.

Educators in my town and Nashville are revolting against our idiot governor. Governor Lee is trying his damnedest to force schools to reopen this month and teachers are saying not until they are allowed vaccines. Memphis has the largest school district in Tennessee with a large majority of the students at or below the poverty line.

I'm preparing for another surge, mentally as well as practically -- but I am in basic agreement with what Riff Raff said. I think this virus is of human-tinkered origin, and it is likely to behave in some really strange ways.

I do think the changes in the way cases are reported is reflecting in the numbers. It was the WHO that issued the reminder about cycle thresholds, and it was a repeat of something they had said before -- so they didn't actually change the recommendations for PCR testing. They were reminding labs that running ridiculously high numbers of cycles would not give meaningful results.

I can't find anything about not counting asymptomatic people who test positive in the case numbers.... could someone post a link to that info?

I think you're referring to the hospitalizations in the over 60s, not general cases in over 65s.

Well, hospitalizations in the over 60s fell during the first and second waves aswell and that was before they had the vac. Infact they've had more hospitalizations with the over 60s in the third wave WITH the vac than they had in the other two waves without vac.

I'm also thinking that we may not be picking up all the variant strains with the current testing. PCR testing is pretty specific, from what I know of it. We are testing for the known variants that are problematic, but there are likely a lot of variants that haven't even been identified. I don't know if the PCR tests would pick those up ...

We may just be in a natural downswing of numbers, which is consistent for this virus (as well as others. The Spanish Flu came in waves.) The vaccines are probably playing a role in the numbers decreasing, and so are the lockdowns, and the recommendations for better masking/double masking/whatever else....

As the more contagious strains make their way across the US, I suspect we will see a big spike -- as someone else said (I don't remember who mentioned this) -- we tend to lag a couple of weeks behind the UK. If that's true, we have trougle brewing.
