How big and what shape and depth are we talking about? The problem is, if your stock tank is above ground your corn is that much taller than it would be. If your tank is big enough, it won't tip, but the corn could break.

We lived in west Texas back then, so wind was always an issue. I don't know if a wind break would work. Depends on what is usual in your area, I would think.

I dug, ok wait, I bribed a friend with lobster dinner to dig, about 3 Ft down. I put in logs, leaves etc etc , then topped off with compost and some nice topsoil. I did an experiment and put some tomatoes on them, and did tomatoes just in the ground. HUGE difference!

Well, I hadn't thought of added height. Corn will go in the ground then. I can use the tank for okra, peppers, etc. Thank you!

And to the AC from Deutschland: I like the idea of a heap of grass. Problem here is wild barley and spider grass is everywhere. I grew purple potatoes last year using stacked tires and hay. Mixed results. I got great potatoes but barely enough yield to fill a sack

I usually grow corn just in the ground. That tradition will keep this year. I grew up between here and Sardis. Back and forth for the first 2 decades.

My topsoil here is a high-clay "black gumbo" with almost no nutrients.

I tried hugulkultur by digging trenches 4 feet wide, 18 inches deep, and about 250 feet long in total. I used logs, rotten wood, brush, and wood chips along with added fertilizer, etc. I used my tractor backhoe, of course.

Had moderate success.

We have so many massive roots from the trees that it is impossible to plow with my tractor or prepare the ground with my tractor-mounted tiller.

So, I used my backhoe to dig up a new garden area, dug out the roots that were exposed by hand, and then tilled it.

This Winter I put cows, ducks, and geese in that area to enrich the soil. My cows get the big round bales and leave a lot of spoiled hay on the ground which I will till in this Spring.

One of my grandmothers fed her family of 8 during the Great Depression off 1/2 acre of gardens. She rotated her chickens through each garden area when she had harvested the vegetables. Worked great and she had poor, sandy soil. She had a milk cow on rented pasture as well.

She canned the extra produce and only had to buy staples like flour and sugar.

The Queen just reminded me to prep and buy MORE food soon. The window may close and we have to have enough to share with others.

The Queen is fully recovered. I still have some chest congestion and throat discomfort, but the antibiotic is working.

BTW, I stocked up on several antibiotics from Fish Aid months ago, so I did not have to visit a doctor.

I used The Survival Medicine Handbook by Alton and the companion book about antibiotics to treat myself.

TBH, we have no idea if we caught a variant of the CCP virus, but we DID recover fast after taking Ivermectin.

I did parking lot pickup a couple of days ago at the feed store and got 5 more tubes of Ivermectin.

Just found out this AM that my step sister's hubby is in ICU.

He is about 50 years old with no comorbidities.
