Looks like we're roughly the same generation. I saw some of the Thalidomide results. Not pretty.Lucky my mother wasn't a user.
 Quoting: Leaver

Tragic, I too have met thalidomide victims. One of the resons I worry about the speed of these vaccines and how well they are really tested and whether a lot of it is just for show.
 Quoting: Rasen1

There is a documentary called "Attacking the Devil" on Netflix about Nazis and thalidomide out right now. Kismet, I suppose
 Quoting: Elevatorguy

If it links the Nazis to thalidomide, it's total FICTION, a make-believe.
Thalidomide was FIRST synthesized in 1952.
Nazi Germany ceased to exist May 7th, 1945.
Please compare the dates...
Got it? It did not exist before 1952...

 Quoting: Texan Buckeye

Ah, thank you. Well, I am a sober minded poster, but I am also definitely on some form of medication, although whether or not it qualifies as "mind-altering" is up for debate.

As for Americans being more rude than Europeans, I would say that is generally an accurate observation, with some exceptions. Having been to Europe, we felt welcomed by the people there, and there wasn't the underlying tension everywhere that seems to permeate American society. I didn't feel the need to have my situational awareness cranked up to full in Rome, Venice, or Zurich the way I do here in my home town.

So, on behalf of all GLP posters with American flags, let me offer an apology to all non-American ACs to whom we have acted in any offensive manner.

No, really... I mean that. No snark. None at all. Ask CC. She's knows snark when she sees it. She'll tell you I'm not being snarky. At least, I think she will. Maybe?

I’ve been trying to catch up, seems covid cases and deaths are globally dropping fast and virus/scientific news about spread, mutations, and life threatening symptoms have dried up over the past two weeks. All of which is reflected in the last 100 pages of this thread...off topic discussions... Seems the only covid info/news GLP is unaware of is R1s dreadful but pending secret information...

I’m thinking this virus is finally fading/dying out...just like the original SARS did a few years ago...or is it the calm before the storm.
 Quoting: Shad0

We're all expecting another big wave. If it was dying out, why are governments still locking down their people? Yk? Sometimes it feels like we're the old school news reporters, waiting for the breaking news so we can call in our stories. Ever see any of those old b&w movies?

And if I may state one more fact. The participants that have the American (or Canadian) flag under their user name are guilty of the above behavior.
I have yet to see an European approach this thread with this behavior. They either have a more civilized conversational approach or simply sit back and observe. My guess a lot of Europeans amongst this thread have a new profound outlook on Americans. And rightfully so. Keeping civilized with composure must be a European thing.

 Quoting: Texan Buckeye

Weird... I was thinking corn. I needs about 3 feet to really anchor and i can get that in this tub. What about a wind block?
 Quoting: Elevatorguy

How big and what shape and depth are we talking about? The problem is, if your stock tank is above ground your corn is that much taller than it would be. If your tank is big enough, it won't tip, but the corn could break.

We lived in west Texas back then, so wind was always an issue. I don't know if a wind break would work. Depends on what is usual in your area, I would think.

Prepping for spring planting. I expect produce costs to soar here shortly due to terrible global harvests the past few years. To add growing space this year I have turned my redneck swimming pool into a hügelkultur deep bed. You should seriously think about planting food this year. Just saying...

SP, how deep did you dig your trenches? I have perfect weather today and figured I would go ahead with trenches
 Quoting: Elevatorguy

I dug, ok wait, I bribed a friend with lobster dinner to dig, about 3 Ft down. I put in logs, leaves etc etc , then topped off with compost and some nice topsoil. I did an experiment and put some tomatoes on them, and did tomatoes just in the ground. HUGE difference!

And to the AC from Deutschland: I like the idea of a heap of grass. Problem here is wild barley and spider grass is everywhere. I grew purple potatoes last year using stacked tires and hay. Mixed results. I got great potatoes but barely enough yield to fill a sack

I knew you ladies would not fail me. Case in point. All it took was a little composure for a few hours and the guilty raised their voice. If you ladies can judge the rest of the worlds reactions to Covid, what is wrong with judging your reactions? Though I am a bit surprised by one genders admittance concerning the comparison. Like I said a rare characteristic. It appears the guilty are allowed snark comments (despite being factual) but turn the table, circumstances change. Full of shit, it appears I was not. Just an easily observable fact. I believe studying people’s reactions to these unprecedented events, and fundamental for the future. Especially once the rest of the population catches up. Thank you though I have learned plenty, but we have only begun. Sadly and unfortunate, much more to observe especially when the “stats” become a bit more personal. Carry on

Elvis, do you mean Edie Falco or Rock Me Amadeus Falco? chuckle About the corn, it might not blow over in Memphis. It grows really well in Mississippi (where I am from), and we don't get a molecule of air blowing in the summer. (Except for those pesky tornadoes, of course.) What say you, TB and GLP?

Germany, that was good advice on preparing the ground for planting! I'm hoping to grow something here when we get a place to live.

Speaking of gardens, is Darth okay? I saw that he was sick, but I haven't had time to catch up on the thread.

Bastetcat (initials Bastetcat), I saw your dominos video as well as your other clues (songs, kitty sitting on yacht brochure, etc.) My first guess to the riddle was based on the 85% / 15% part. If not medical, then transportation makes sense. But if the answer is more systemic, then that means pretty much everything. It's not that I think that is underwhelming (obviously it would be catastrophic), it's just that "the collapse of everything" has been talked about on this thread since last January. Hope your hubby is doing okay. :)

I was at a Space Station symposium years back and there was a panel discussion with a bunch of Space Station veterans on the table.

There was a question about clashing cultures in space.

A European astronaut said, "Yes, there is a definite difference between Europeans and Americans. However, we find that the Russians and the Americans seem to be much more alike than either is to Europeans".

Somehow, despite being on the opposing sides in the Cold War, I always admired the Russians. They remind me of people from the frontiers of the West or, sometimes, the hillbillies of Appalachia. Somewhat of a wild, hard-partying bunch.

Prepping for spring planting. I expect produce costs to soar here shortly due to terrible global harvests the past few years. To add growing space this year I have turned my redneck swimming pool into a hügelkultur deep bed. You should seriously think about planting food this year. Just saying...

Pretty sure most of us here ..... are on that page.

Been saving peach cups to use as seed starters.

Gonna start a couple of apple trees..... longterm thinking is needed.....
 Quoting: CleverCreator

Planted peach, apple and orange trees last year. For long-long term, I put in two olives trees. I like the idea that in 60 years, the olive trees will mature and people can eat from it.
 Quoting: Elevatorguy

My topsoil here is a high-clay "black gumbo" with almost no nutrients.

I tried hugulkultur by digging trenches 4 feet wide, 18 inches deep, and about 250 feet long in total. I used logs, rotten wood, brush, and wood chips along with added fertilizer, etc. I used my tractor backhoe, of course.

Had moderate success.

We have so many massive roots from the trees that it is impossible to plow with my tractor or prepare the ground with my tractor-mounted tiller.

So, I used my backhoe to dig up a new garden area, dug out the roots that were exposed by hand, and then tilled it.

This Winter I put cows, ducks, and geese in that area to enrich the soil. My cows get the big round bales and leave a lot of spoiled hay on the ground which I will till in this Spring.

One of my grandmothers fed her family of 8 during the Great Depression off 1/2 acre of gardens. She rotated her chickens through each garden area when she had harvested the vegetables. Worked great and she had poor, sandy soil. She had a milk cow on rented pasture as well.

She canned the extra produce and only had to buy staples like flour and sugar.

The Queen just reminded me to prep and buy MORE food soon. The window may close and we have to have enough to share with others.

Darth! You're alive! I hope you and the Queen are feeling better. hf

dyin - There is a place in the Shenandoah Valley called Cooter's. It's a Dukes of Hazzard museum. Lol. And I once saw an 18-wheeler in Italy at a truck stop named the Generale Lee. That really made me lol.

Bastetcat, some more synchronicity: My military flight yesterday was called Atlas Air. They are a contractor / charter company, and their symbol is Atlas holding up the globe. Of course that made me think of Atlas Shrugged, which we have mentioned a few times on here and DR's thread.

The Queen is fully recovered. I still have some chest congestion and throat discomfort, but the antibiotic is working.

BTW, I stocked up on several antibiotics from Fish Aid months ago, so I did not have to visit a doctor.

I used The Survival Medicine Handbook by Alton and the companion book about antibiotics to treat myself.

TBH, we have no idea if we caught a variant of the CCP virus, but we DID recover fast after taking Ivermectin.

I did parking lot pickup a couple of days ago at the feed store and got 5 more tubes of Ivermectin.

Just found out this AM that my step sister's hubby is in ICU.

He is about 50 years old with no comorbidities.

Dear Rasen1:

That thing about the water.....

Powers to fluoridate the country’s water supply will be handed to the government within weeks, according to The Times newspaper today. As things stand, only councils can add fluoride to water.. They say it’s to do with fighting tooth decay. As usual, they’re lying and fluoridation of our water is just the beginning.

A new government bill proposes that ministers take back powers ceded to the NHS in 2012, to make it easier for them to order the NHS to adopt a more preventative approach to healthcare. That sounds benign enough, but it isn’t. In reality it’ll open the door to even more state interference in our lives. One line in the white paper which contains the proposals reads: “…care that focuses not just on treating particular conditions, but also on lifestyles, on healthy behaviours and prevention.” Pay close attention to “lifestyles and healthy behaviours.” ...

They're really on a power trip now. Bet they can't believe what they've got away with so far.

Not the water, pay attention to the bit about the lifestyles, as already mentioned.

Carry on
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73892469

That’s just it.....

We carry on just fine. Your inability to tell the difference up and down.... troll versus not a troll.... that’s your problem.

You haven’t learned a damned thing..... but you are trying to push buttons.... and while I will snark.... let me be extremely clear, I can sleep just fine after cleaning up your ignorant views.

Twathorse.

 Quoting: Serenity Now

Tav Falco all day long!

I usually grow corn just in the ground. That tradition will keep this year. I grew up between here and Sardis. Back and forth for the first 2 decades.
 Quoting: Elevatorguy

Well I had no idea there was another Falco! Lol. I'll have to listen to their music asap. :)
