I don't know what to think about the current numbers. They're definitely falling from the last peak, but that seems to be a pattern that happens with this virus.

We got a communication from the President of our university about plans for fall, budget worries, and so forth. They're hoping to have some people back on campus in the fall, but said the plans were subject to public safety guidelines, etc. I don't plan to go back in the fall, and have already put in my request to teach online. It seems the department is willing to work with me on that. If need be, I probably have enough sick time accrued to take a semester leave, though I'd hate to have to use it.

I'm rather expecting we'll see another large wave, as the new variants make their way across the US ... particularly since guidelines are being relaxed everywhere. I understand that the logic to reopening (at least in CA) is based on available ICU beds, but it does little to actually control the pandemic.

I'm somewhat hopeful that the vaccines are working -- even if they just slow/reduce infection spread, that would be a major help. I'm paying a lot of attention to how folks are doing after being vaccinated. I have one friend who has immune problems similar to mine -- she had both doses of Pfizer, and has been fine so far. I'm not ready to roll up my sleeve just yet, but am watching and waiting.

Now that could be due to the fact that the whole nation had a bad outbreak at the same time, previously when one area was getting better another was getting worse.

I think we are seeing, especially in places like Brazil, that natural herd immunity is not able to be achieved.

Herd immunity through a vax might work, if it is broad spectrum enough to work on the variants. In terms of natural herd immunity, the antibodies don't seem to be robust enough to protect against reinfection with other strains -- or possibly even the same strain -- long-term.

I'm dearly hoping the vax does work, and that the problems are few enough that people can get it safely. I have my reservations, to be sure ... this disease is tricky. It seems to be that the longer term problems are caused by the immune response to the virus, and theoretically, the vax would cause a similar immune response. That could open the door to a lot of longstanding problems for vaccinated people.

In all seriousness, I feel sad for the people who really bought into that. As you know, I'm no fan of Trump -- but I do feel for the true believers who were led to believe that a giant victory was going to happen for them. Apparently, some are still pushing that hopium -- I'm not really following that much, but there's a rumor going around about a date in early March when supposedly there is going to be a military coup. There was a thread about it last night. Seems even more far-fetched than the Kraken to me, but some people just won't give up hope.

I hope the new administration can get their shit together to handle this virus. The decline in the rates has nothing to do with the new admin, except maybe the changes in the way testing is done (which was a decision by the WHO, I believe.) Biden is pushing for school reopening, saying it can be done safely. Maybe at a K-12 level, with small classes and good sanitation, it could be -- but certainly not in a packed, badly ventilated, university lecture hall! I don't really buy that it can be done safely even at the lower grade levels.

As many of you parents have said, anything and everything (colds, flu, lice, you name it!) makes the rounds at school and then comes home from there. The same is true at a university level. I teach night classes ... and by the time we get into the classroom, it has been full of a rotating cast of hundreds of students in a single day. If something is going around, it's going to be hanging out in that classroom. The ventilation is next to non-existent (basement rooms, no windows, ancient heating/ac systems that rarely work, etc.)

I don't think any area of the US has enough proliferation of wind/solar that if it were all to go offline at once it couldn't be compensated for by simple cycle turbines.

Anecdotally, I do believe the numbers. A month ago people I knew and clients of mine were having outbreaks all over the place, now I'm not hearing about anything.

Certainly not a peer-reviewed case study but I'll take first hand info over uncle intel any day.
