The end of the coronavirus pandemic is on the horizon at last, but the timeline for actually getting there feels like it shifts daily, with updates about viral variants, vaccine logistics, and other important variables seeming to push back the finish line or scoot it forward. When will we be able to finally live our lives again?


It’s unlikely that enough people will get vaccinated in the spring to restore normalcy. In fact, experts fear that the pandemic could get much worse in the near term, because variants of the virus that are more contagious or vaccine-resistant than the original version have begun circulating in the United States. The damage those variants will do is still unknown; “March to May is the mystery,” as my colleague Robinson Meyer wrote earlier this month.

The good news, though, is that even with these variants, existing vaccines appear to reduce the risk of severe illness, meaning more and more people will be protected as vaccinations continue. And vaccines can change individuals’ risk calculus. Ashish Jha, the dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health, told me that in a month or so, in the absence of a variant-driven surge, he’d probably be comfortable going to a friend’s house for a drink, mask-free and indoors, if he and his friend were both fully vaccinated. “As we get into late spring, a lot of that stuff—the smaller gatherings of vaccinated people—I think starts becoming quite possible,” Jha said.

Neanderthal gene can confer protection against severe COVID-19, finds study

Some of the genes in the human genome appear to confer a protective effect against severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A new paper published online in the journal PNAS describes genes involved in innate immunity that have undergone variations between different human subgroups.

Immunosuppressive therapies may be linked to severe COVID-19 in those with multiple sclerosis


In the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), patients with coexisting medical conditions have been noted to be at a higher risk of progressive and severe disease. Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), who are often on immunosuppressive therapy, may be among these high-risk groups.

A new study, released on the medRxiv* preprint server, examines the associations between immunosuppressive disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) used in MS with adverse outcomes in an international cohort of patients with MS COVID-19.

Statins shown to reduce COVID-19 severity and lower mortality

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread, driven by the emergence of new and more transmissible variants. The mortality and long-term morbidity are known to be probably fueled by the cytokine storm that is typically observed in patients with severe and critical COVID-19.

Much attention has been focused on ways to reduce the deadly exaggeration of normal inflammatory reactions to this pathogen. A new research paper posted to the medRxiv* preprint server describes the alleviation of hyper-inflammatory phenomena following the administration of statins, drugs more widely known for their use in reducing blood cholesterol levels, to patients with COVID-19.

Study shows real-world effectiveness of Moderna and Pfizer/BioNtech vaccines

Researchers in the United States have conducted a study demonstrating the real-world effectiveness of the recently approved Moderna and Pfizer/BioNtech vaccines at protecting against infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) – the agent that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The team – from Nference in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota –says the findings are on par with the results reported in large phase 3 randomized clinical trials.

The results showed that the vaccines are effective at both preventing infection and reducing the severity of COVID-19.

Venky Soundararajan and colleagues also demonstrate that vaccination effectively protects individuals at the highest risk of becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2 and experiencing severe disease.

NIH study finds that people with SARS-CoV-2 antibodies may have a low risk of future infection

People who have had evidence of a prior infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, appear to be well protected against being reinfected with the virus, at least for a few months, according to a newly published study from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This finding may explain why reinfection appears to be relatively rare, and it could have important public health implications, including decisions about returning to physical workplaces, school attendance, the prioritization of vaccine distribution, and other activities.

For the study, researchers at NCI, part of the National Institutes of Health, collaborated with two health care data analytics companies (HealthVerity and Aetion, Inc.) and five commercial laboratories. The findings were published on Feb. 24 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Genetics May Play Role in Determining Immunity to COVID-19

Computational studies suggest a set of genes that regulate immune response help determine robustness and durability of neutralizing antibodies to virus

Neutralizing antibodies develop within two weeks of a SARS-CoV-2 infection, but their durability and intensity can vary by individual, prompting concerns about the prospects of long-lasting immunity and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.
In a PLOS ONE paper, published online February 11, 2021, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine report that individual immune response to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, may be limited by the major histocompatibility complex or MHC, a set of variable genes that code for cell surface proteins essential for the adaptive immune system.

Mayo researchers explore genetics behind COVID-19 outcomes


Some patients with COVID-19 experience severe complications, such as organ damage, shortness of breath, neurological impairment and chronic fatigue. A team of researchers within Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine is contributing to the global effort of using advanced genetic sequencing to find out which genes influence disease outcomes.

“Our findings will be crucial in treating and caring for COVID-19 survivors, as well as to try to prevent lingering complications in newly infected people,” says Konstantinos Lazaridis, M.D., the Everett J. and Jane M. Hauck associate director of Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine.

Dr. Lazaridis and his team are building a library of genomic sequencing data of consented patients who tested positive for COVID-19. They are using a comprehensive technology that can analyze 20,000 genes that code for proteins, plus hundreds of thousands of other genetic areas outside the protein-coding regions that are known to be informative, and thus have the most impact on a person's health and disease.

raqi government imposes COVID restrictions weeks before papal visit:

The Iraqi government has announced new COVID-19 restrictions, including the closure of all places of worship, less than three weeks before Pope Francis’ scheduled trip to Iraq.

Most of the new coronavirus measures will go into force from Feb. 18 until March 4, but the closure of places of worship is “until further notice,” according to the Iraqi government’s website. The national curfew will remain in place until at least March 8.

Basically, the use of interferon by MS patients actually cuts the risk of ICU or death by 70-80%.

This also agrees with a separate study by the University of Southampton, published in The Lancet..which conferred a 79% improvement for ICU/death.
