P13315 Sipping my coffee getting ready for the ER. I haven't been since Sunday, per my weekend schedule, but have been getting texts from coworkers. I dread it. For the first time in my 20+ years of ER nursing I'm scared to go to work. I'm scared to catch this and bring it home to my family. After every shift I count the days until I'm out of the window. Quoting: Tarnished Halo Sunday will be my last day in the ER for a while. I'm mad, glad and sad at the same time. Sad to leave the job that I love, mad because lack of PPE is forcing me out and glad that my chances of staying healthy are going to increase. I'll be back to the bedside when this dies down or we get enough PPE to care for our patients while protecting ourselves. For those of you who think I'm "abandoning" my coworkers and patients, I've already struggled with this. I'll be the one who returns to care for patients when they need care in the aftermath. I'll be the one to work for my coworkers when they need a well deserved vacation. I'll be the one to fill in the holes left when nurses leave the profession in droves when they realize they were used, abused and are just a number to the many, many hospitals they work for. I've already made a difference in my new job in logistics/operations. I've helped sort through processes from a clinician's point of view, not just the people in an office. Stay safe out there!!
