Yep. The only good news is that it seems these later onset symptoms are currently assumed to be outside of the infectious window. The bad news being that is based on a very basic understanding of what is going on.

China is overreacting to a degree but that seems like the most sensible reaction to the situation at hand.

It's just seriously creeping me out.

I live among an elderly population but they have always been an extremely healthy elderly population. They're the independent living rich and retired who decided to buy a casa by the sea. They do yoga. They drink wine. They sit in the Spanish sun and chatter away with new friends. They keep their homes remarkably neat and tidy down to the tiniest detail of how the plants are arranged.

In all of the time I'd been here before COVID, I had heard an ambulance maybe a few times a year.

Now, a few times a week is normal for the sirens.

Now, their homes smell like the elderly (even a mask isn't covering that scent enough when I walk by) - of incontinence, bed sores, and physical neglect. Of the end of life.

Now, the plants on their balconies are dying. The fruit left in a bowl on an outdoor table has gone from old to mold, to just a green shadow left on the surface.

Now, their families are taking them to live with them (hello new vectors) because they have suddenly become incapable of taking care of themselves. These same elderly who used to walk the dog every day, who used to stroll into town every day for groceries, who enjoyed a nice lunch at the cafes every day.

Not all of them, mind you. There's still one in his 60s who walks his dog every day. His clothes are no longer as neat as they used to be. I don't think he even bothered with the zipper or buttons the other day. But he's still out there, moving quickly enough to keep up with the dog he can't bother to put on a leash anymore.

And the young still come. It's summer. They bring their children, they gather together, they take off their masks. And they give the place a sense of life. With them there, you almost don't notice the absence of the elderly. Almost.

It is, but the numbers are a bit deceptive. DC/VA/MD have been steadily declining for a while. Florida does not publish how many people are currently in the hospital for a reason though.

The today and yesterday numbers for deaths are weekend numbers. The difference between dying and being a recorded death is paper work, for some reason we decided that we don't do (as much) paper work two days in the week...

But deaths are on the decline for the US overall.

I like your updates, but daily numbers, even if compared to a week period, are irrelevant and skewed enough with week-end numbers (2 days out of 7) to present a reliable picture.


And maybe, once a week, do a 2 weeks to previous 2 weeks comparison?


That will negate a lot from week-end numbers skewing (not all, but much more then 1 week to 1 day comparison) and show us a nice evolution in cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
