I am so stressed. Since I am 5 ppl removed I am not that freaked out but now I have to telework when i am really needed there and have to wait over a week for results. I was actually ashamed having to tell my boss.

Texas hospitalizations starting to flatten out, only about 500 in the past 4 days when there was 1400 in the previous two 4 day periods.

Sorry, I'm late to the discussion, but as of right now I say a 5. It all depends on this winter.

It doesn't make sense, given the average 9k new cases every day.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I'm thinking something else is happening. Icu's at capacity, people not being admitted into hospitals, etc.

ICU's reported at less than 10% capacity in Texas.

Best gardening book I ever read.

Steve was a self sufficient back-to-the-land guy for his entire life.

He was in the seed growing and selling biz, so he knows every scam in that industry. He is an old codger now and lays out the brutal truths...which often go against the modern "wisdom".

He also provides advice on gardening when all you have is a bit of ground and a few basic hand tools such as a shovel.

For example:

1. Space your plants farther apart, not in an intensive raised bed. Less water required and each plant can get nutrients from the soil without too much competition.

2. Use high quality seed from reputable suppliers. YES, you can use your own heirlooms, but there will be inbreeding and genetic drift. Growing seed is a complicated business that requires a lot of ground.

3. Don't use transplants unless you are in a cold climate with a short growing season. Direct planted seeds will outperform transplants in most cases.

4. You will lose young plants to fungus, disease, and pests. Steve says that Mother Nature is weeding out the weak ones for you.

There's a wicked delay in the reporting of new cases, when I got tested the results came back in 36 hours... but I think in these southern states it's like a week or two.
