You bring up some very good points though. Which is why I'm reassessing the city. Granted at the beginning they will be death traps. Let's just say the grid went down. Within 90 days most everyone in a city would be dead or fled to the countryside, but if you could make it through those first 90 days. There's a lot of meat left on the carcass of the old world.
Sitting on my back porch drinking my coffee. I see three houses full of solar panels on their roof's. There's a country club right down the road that is full of golf carts for 6volt deep cycle batteries across the street from them is a marina I could grab 12volt deep cycle batteries from there. One of the house might have an inverter to go from dc to ac. If not, best chance would be a company that installed solar for homes. I can gut several abandoned houses for all the wiring I need. Now I have power.
Next door neighbor has a pool, I can re-plumb the gutters from 5 houses around me to flow directly into the pool. Cover it so you don't lose water to evaporation. That's a huge amount of rain water collection that should serve our needs.
The next house over from my neighbor with the pool is a 3 story duplex. With snatch blocks and pulleys I can put my 375 gallon water tote on it's roof. Come off the tote with a 4inch pvc pipe gradually reducing down to a 3/4" line should give me pretty good water pressure. Get a transfer pump. Best bet to find one is a mechanics shop, they are always emptying out barrels and such. In order to pump water from the pool to the tote on the roof.
My backyard is big enough for a garden to sustain us but if I take down the fence between me and my other neighbor my gardening capacity has doubled.
There is a storm drain about 20ft from where my sewer line connects to the city's main line. Bust up the sidewalk reroute the sewer line to dump directly into the storm drain.
Now I have power, running indoor water and sewage, and food production.

The nerve's in the area where they scrape are not usually agitated. If done right it will briefly hurt like hell but quickly pass. The nerves send a signal much stronger then they normally do and your brain interprets that as "great distress" in that area because it's normally calm. If it didn't hurt or was very uncomfortable the sample taken is likely not representative.
