Pneumonia kills about a quarter of a million people in the US every year. Most of these are old, weak or incapacitated and at or very near the end of their natural lives but still, those are pretty big and scary numbers. Again, no one worries about it. Before the advent of antibiotics in the 1940s, pneumonia used to kill nearly half the people who got it, including young and otherwise healthy people. Back then, pneumonia was greatly feared all the time and by everyone but this has now been long forgotten.
