I always used to be horrified when they did that but somehow it never seemed to change anything for the worst despite all the moaning and flailing of the experts. Getting closer to convincing me we are in a simulation.

Let me clear, the lack of supplies in the states that needed them reflect badly on the federal response, with trump insisting that states we're asking for more they needed and implying they they were selling back to a competitive market he created.
Trumps seems fixated on keeping tests high and positive tests low because of politics.

I don't know how to respond to that.

We don’t know about covid19 specifically, but we do know that there are RNA viruses that have no problem at all with infecting parasites.

We also know there are many parasites which can hoard a stash of food from their hosts cells and stay dormant for a very long time - years and years.

We also know that parasites love sugar and alcohol and fermented whatever so, whether you like my conclusion or not, in times of an RNA virus plague, which may or may not hang out in it’s host’s parasites, it’s a good idea to not eat what pleases parasites and eat what parasites hate so much they would rather commit suicide by jumping out of butts.
 Quoting: sos

You are correct in every assessment you made, I have doubt in regards that SarS-nCoV-2 can actually infect a non mammal species though. If you can prove that it would substantiate your worries further, I would be more then open to see it and make my own judgement.
 Quoting: Dutchy20

Well all we know is that other RNA viruses have figured it out. They have also figured out how to infect endosymbionts so, hypothetically, they could be hijacking the infected people’s mitochondria. That would make people pretty tired, etc.

Speaking of tired.

Good night. Sweet dreams.

Good job, Mr. Darth! While you are focused on the farming aspect, ask Mrs. Darth to make a list of things like shoes, winter coats, underwear, socks, phone chargers, things that might be in short supply. That is the category that I'm working on now, and I have been surprised how quickly Amazon is showing "Unavailable" or "Only 2 left in stock" for a lot of items. :)

Add a variable DC power supply. You can hook it up to a battery and regulate voltage to keep your phone etc charged. USB chargers are ok upto 5v, quick charge varies.

Great idea.

After Hurricane Ike we did not have electric power for a week.

I had to rig a charger off my truck battery.

Hey, I'm sorry If I made you feel that way. I wouldn't have responded if I didn't see it as feasible. I read the science anyways, I'm here because of perspectives like yours.

Even if you are wrong you are doing better then most virologists insisting they are right. Science is a process of trail and error, If I made you feel like I was attacking you I'm sorry that you read it that way. I asked for sources and what you based your opinion on because it makes sense that it might be correct and I want to study it further.

Medically: They are rushing the vaccines and hyping the hope. Bad idea, possibly dangerous.

Politically: Everybody wants their agenda served. Wasting precious resources.

Financially: A total clusterf***. They are passing out checks which are inadequate to people who are sitting at home playing video games.

Idea: How about a Strategic Food Reserve? Buy up all that Australian beef, unsold milk in the USA, grain, beans, etc. and put it in long term storage. The Average Joe would be less anxious.

Instead of bailing out Wall Street, how about something like the WPA of the Great Depression? Build medical devices, manufacture loads of PPE, educate the sheeple on avoiding the virus, build new hospitals that can be STERILIZED and not be infectious swamps.

Put people to work increasing ag output and feeding the world. China cannot do that; the USA CAN.

Use the unemployed people to fight the war against the virus. To me, this is the equivalent of WWII.

When the crisis is over, put those people back into the civilian economy as it recovers.

People keep their self respect when they WORK for their daily bread.

Oh, and if the banks fail, LIQUIDATE them and make the depositors whole. The only reason we bail out the banks and Wall Street is because they are generous contributors to pols.

End 'o rant.

BTW, while my father was training as a pilot in WWII, my mother ran a milling machine in Houston heat and cold making oil drilling bits. She worked almost every day of the war and put it all into war bonds. Ended up moderately wealthy.

She never learned to drive a car. Amazing what she did in the war.

BTW, she BOUGHT a car. Her mechanic was a guy named AJ Foyt. Fer reals.

"Take food out of a container with a spoon and eat it with a knife and fork - not your fingers."

It might be better in the current circumstances to order hot, freshly cooked food, rather than cold or raw items.

For the most cautious and vulnerable though, careful preparation and cooking may be reassuring.

"With a pizza for example, if you wanted to be really safe, you could even pop it into the microwave for a couple of minutes," Prof Bloomfield adds.

For unwrapped fresh goods, which could have been handled by anyone - wash thoroughly under running water and leave to dry," she adds

If scientists were honest, and that seems to be a greater challenge every day, they'd be freer in admitting that they often do NOT understand the collateral impact/effect of different treatment regimens and pharmacological effects of various drugs or drug combinations.

Minoxidil was NOT created to grow hair, it's a useful side effect of a drug designed for another use entirely.

Any number of paradoxical usage/applications are literally stumbled upon. Sadly so are negative side effects that don't manifest sufficiently during testing and only become known after wider usage over time.

In the current situation? I'm sure that pretty much every substance known to man that has ANY remote chance of working is being "tested" in some way. Many are short term, small sample size tests.

There may end up being several treatments/regimens that have a positive effect. It's doubtful that there will be only "one" that is effective.

taketheredpill--

I am in the same situation. Urban dweller, no outside space or even room to grow much indoors. I know you weren't asking me, but here is my list:

First and foremost: Water filter -- a good one. I have a Berkey, and (supposedly) another on the way -- I had mine before the pandemic started, and have another one on back order, but it hasn't yet shipped. I have plenty of replacement filters for my existing one, but would really like a second entire unit since I also have housemates. Also, I bought collapsible buckets with spigots that can be used to store extra filtered water, and some collapsible buckets to store unfiltered water in an emergency.

Back up power supply -- obviously, generators aren't really possible in an apartment, but I got a couple of those battery types that campers and festival-goers use... and solar panels to go with them.

Batteries/battery powered lighting. Many battery lamps are also power banks, and they are a good value.

Warm blankets if you don't have them, in the event you lose power/heat

Non-perishable foods -- canned goods that can be eaten as is if necessary, nuts, nut butters -- frozen goods are fine, but realize that they are of limited life if the power goes out. I bought a couple of collapsible coolers and have a number of freezer bags.
Beans, rice, that sort of thing are good if you are short on cash, but they are harder to find than usual.

Milk powder or canned milk (in my case it's coconut milk/almond, etc, since I'm vegan). Whatever kind of relatively non-perishable shortening you use. I use coconut oil.

Flour and other baking supplies if you can find them. I use nut flours for baking, and those have been easier to come by.

Medications and anything you will need if you do get sick -- thermometer, pulse oxomiter, heating pad, OTC medications

Supplements! This was near the top of my list... Vit C, Vit D and K, Zinc, and a good medicinal mushroom blend for immune balance. A good multivitamin goes a long way, too, if food is short.

If you can get a dehydrator and a food saver they're good investments -- you can make food last a lot longer that way. A good pressure cooker for canning is also a good investment, but there is a learning curve to canning. I'm learning it myself. I actually bought the only electric pressure cooker/canner that is supposedly safe for canning non-acidic vegetables -- and I did this because I don't trust our electric hotplate with an old-school pressure canner. If you have a good stove, I'd go with the old school models.

Protein powder is good in the event that your usual protein sources run short.

I plan to start sprouting my own greens, which is apparently pretty easy to do. Sprouting jars are fairly affordable, and if you can't find seeds, look for organic seed mixes at feed stores (if there's one near you, or look online.)

Household products, particularly disinfectants and things that have been hard to find.

Rather than scramble for paper products, I bought a bidet attachment for the toilet. Wish I had bought it years ago. We use very little toilet paper now (you still need some, IMO)

I did buy an entire case of toilet paper on Amazon, and also paper towels ... and a big batch of the white shop towels for general cleaning.

Extra batteries. Extra medications if there are any you can't go without.

That's my main list. I'm sure the experts will chime in ... but I'm prepared for things to get very scarce around here, and I've been avoiding stores for months now. I will need to restock before winter, though, as I will eventually run out of food and some basics if I don't.
Looks like freedom but it feels like death. It's something in between I guess... it's closing time.

Strange times, I dare say bugging out in February looked like a good idea at the time, I guess it all depended on where you live.

I currently dwell in a village in the North of England, middle of nowhere, except for a couple of CV-19 deaths, everything here is normal, people doing their daily business, not a face mask in sight!

Regarding parasites: Whether or not parasites harbor COVID (not unreasonable to think about, it's true of other diseases), Ivermectin is showing some promise as a treatment. Plus, having parasites (which we all do, to one degree or another) weakens the immune system, so being rid of that burden is helpful in any event.

It may be that there is a parasitic component to this disease, as some others have mentioned. Malaria is actually a parasite -- and Sars-Cov-2 seems to attack the vascular system, whether directly or indirectly (as a result of the immune response) in a way that is similar to the malarial diseases. Also, both Ivermectin and Hydroxycholroquine/Quinine are antiviral in addition to being antimalarial.

Ivermectin is an old, safe drug. I use it avian medicine regularly, and I've used it on myself, too, when we had an infestation of mites. I regularly use herbal antiparasitics, because I rehab birds, thus am exposed their droppings regularly. Many of these birds are/were wild, and often have some pretty nasty parasite loads.

It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, really yields a cure for COVID. I'm not holding out any hope for a vaccine working to fight it, so our best chance is probably good prevention strategies, and something that shortens the course and severity of the virus. Antivirals don't have a great track record of working, but perhaps one will be found that's effective against it.

Thank you this is all great. I'm able to see a possible food supply issue but as far as powers and water....It's a virus. Not a natural Earth disaster so I'm not meaning to sound snarky, but why do people think it will get this bad like how it would be after a hurricane kind of thing?.

I'm damn glad I bugged out in mid March! I would have bugged out even sooner, but I still had to work and take care of some important things to keep family safe. I'm in the SF Bay Area, and it was already making the rounds here at the end of last year. March was very nearly too late! I know a lot of people who have or have had it.

Redpill -- You don't sound snarky at all, and thanks for asking so politely! -- it's a legitimate question. I am planning for a worst-case scenario, where enough of the work-force is out sick that the basic infrastructure goes down, and we don't have access to clean water for a period of time. Our water supply here is already being much more heavily chlorinated than usual, and our tap water is pretty horrible on a good day, so I already filter all my water. I think that's doubly important if you want to keep your immune system up, and/or if you are used to relying on bottled water (as many city dwellers are.) I have saved a lot of money with a good water filter.

Water filters are already getting very hard to come by -- Berkey has been back ordered since this began. (They also no longer ship to CA, thanks to prop 65, but I have found ways around that.)

I'm also planning for power outages since I'm in an area that's already prone to them (CA), and I live on a major earthquake fault. It's wise to prepare for any normal things that might hit your area (weather, natural disasters) and realize that you may have a much depleted work force to respond to those things if the pandemic keeps getting worse.

It's all basic disaster preparedness that I should have done years ago, but this kicked my butt into gear. I hope a lot of what I stocked up on is actually overkill, and I won't need it. I'll eventually use the water filter replacements, I'll probably need the backup power supply at some point, and I will also eventually eat the canned goods. My housemates laughed at me, at first ... but they stopped laughing pretty early on when they saw how bad this could potentially get, and how few supplies might be available.

What's in a number?

People have a difficult time visualizing a number if its beyond something that they use in day to day life.

Everyone knows what a cup of sugar looks like, but what about a thousand of them?

As of this morning, by official numbers 96,363 people have been killed in the United States by the Coronavirus.

Imagine driving in your car- every mile that you have driven in your car for the last 6 years, there is a person standing there on the side of the road next to every mile marker that you have driven past for the last 6 years. That's what the number 96,363 looks like.

Or to put it another way, if you took every person killed in the United States in the last 2 months by the Coronavirus and laid them out on the ground, touching head to foot, it would make a solid line of bodies long enough to line the interstate all the way from New York City, past Philadelphia, all the way to Wilmington, Delaware.
You only hear about SpecOps when they go wrong.

Article from 5/15 based on an interview at the time MN started opening back up.

We’re just in the second inning’: Kashkari, Osterholm offer bleak assessment of what is yet to be wrought by COVID-19

Neel Kashkari, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, said the recovery will take longer — and the economic pain will be more severe — than even he had thought two months ago.

“Unfortunately there is so much that we don’t know right now,” Kashkari said. “Most of the news that we’ve gotten in the last couple of months has been bad news, unfortunately. It’s hard to call the bottom.”
...

[Osterholm] “The one guardrail is we can’t shut down our economy, our world as we know it for 18 months if that’s what it’s going to take,” he said. “That will destroy society, not just an economy. We can’t at the same time let this virus go willy-nilly at an unlimited level and bring down our health care system.”
