US may turn to more 'pooled testing' as COVID-19 spreads
Pooled testing involves taking the nasal or throat swabs from several people and placing those samples into one tube to test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. If that pooled sample comes back positive, samples included in the pool must then be retested one by one, to pinpoint the infected individuals.
But if the pooled sample comes back negative, no additional testing is needed for that group of individuals. [ link to www.livescience.com (secure)] ... So even if there is 1 positive, won't that 1 sample contaminate all samples and they will all come back positive????  Quoting: dyin Yes, they will not know who among those tested is infected and they will all have to be individually tested. But if none of them are infected, they just got a dozen negative results for the price of one test. Not sure I agree with the strategy, but it's innovative if tests are in short supply. This is idiocy. You'll have many magnitudes more of false positives. This is just stupid. To save supplies, especially in situations where resources are limited, and test more people, pooled testing may be implemented. Pooled testing means taking samples from multiple people, storing part of each sample individually, and combining the other part of each sample into batches, or pools, and then testing each pool. This allows many more people to be tested in an initial round of testing than tests that do not use pools, and then for any pool that indicates a positive result, the samples that contributed to that pool can be tested individually to identify the positive people.
