Nef... my heart goes out to you with the quitting smoking. It's a bear. I quit at one point using nicotine gum, but eventually started smoking again when I dated (and later married, and have since divorced) as smoker. I finally did quit actual cigarettes a number of years back, by switching over to vaping.

I still vape nicotine. It may or may not be less horrible for me than smoking, but it's cleaner, my lungs feel better, and it doesn't stink. I can vape inside, too, which I can't do with smoking (roommates).

I've been meaning to give a go at canning. I've never done it. I bought the only electric pressure cooker that said it can do pressure canning (though there is also one Instant Pot that does it now, too.) I would have gone with an old-school pressure canner, except that we're in a converted loft space, and our stove is a hotplate ... so I don't trust that at all. My grandma did canning with an oldschool pressure cooker, but I never learned how to do it.

I got worried about the water supply a while back ... I now have two Berkey filters (a light, which I have had for years, and a Royal) ... and I have an even larger one still on backorder. I have a bunch of water storage containers, too... though we are a household of four, so even all that only goes so far.

I do have a good supply of non-perishables built up in my pantry, which is great.

I have sprouts sprouting, and Aerogardens to plant.... I certainly don't have the self sufficiency of a farm owner, or even someone with a yard ... but I'm doing about as well as an apartment dweller can.

Sounds like your doing good. We can only do with what we have and what our situation allows. It's easy for some to say you need to be on 10 acres in the middle of BFE in order to survive the coming times.That's not an option for most. So I say give those folks the finger for playing the surviving game on easy mode. Come play on the hard level with me and plan to survive in a city.

How's breaking the habit going?

I'm hoping

Going about as well as old people fuck. Lots of moaning and bitching and not getting a whole lot accomplished. 1st day slept a lot. 2nd day climbing the walls, pacing the floor, looking for something to snack on. Don't have snacks in the house so I made a 4 layer triple chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache/mousse filling between the layers, with a chocolate butter cream frosting,with a chocolate mirror glaze on top. Only saving grace was it was so damn rich you could only eat a small sliver of it. 3rd day just as bad, my morning coffee is like masturbation without the pay off. It's still good but sorely lacking. Broke down at the end of third day and bought a pack. Stayed irritable and in a foul mood all day long. Also why I didn't post much couldn't just sit and read and post.
Going to get some patches and have at it again. Probably get as big as an elephant!

France is going crazy.

The hospital near me has reached "overload", the numbers given by the government are fake, they say facilities are empty but it's wrong. I know it because local news outlet and healthcare workers I know are reporting the overload even if the government denies it.

Sirens are wailing night and day, I have counted at least 20 sirens a day in my town and it's no big one, I have seen some ambulances in my streets with paramedics taking coughing people.

My GP tells "coronavirus is everywhere, most common medical issue these days" but the government still goes ahead with "live with the virus" "go on as normally as possible".

We are reopening schools and work as normally as possible, with no social distancing or whatever, only masks, over half of the masks french use have NOT ANY FILTRATION properties and are shown to be as effective as paper tissue to blow your nose.

Myself I am an older teacher with several major lung issues and overweight. We have no protection at all. Only paper masks, not N95 respirators or so. There are no measures at all in schools. Up to 38 students in the same classroom without distancing, windows are locked.

Government says to protect the vulnerable but it's fake, even in an area as infected as mine teachers with major comorbidities have to work without any protection.

I don't know what to do, being as sick as I am, I'm just probably going to die.

Thanks not giving up yet. It's fall back and regroup and hit it from another angle. The cold turkey thing after 35 years doesn't seem to be a good plan of action.
