No, that's a valid question that actually has an answer based on data from past vaccines. The theory is that approximately 70% of the population has to be vaccinated for it to have the desired impact. Now, that's based on past vaccines. Covid-19 might have completely different requirements.

Epidemiologists have touted the number for covid19 herd immunity in a population as being 80% of the total population. So with a 95% effective vaccine you're looking at at least 85% of the population who are going to have to be vaccinated regularly to achieve that herd immunity. And even if there is that much take up of the vaccine, reaching the herd immunity threshold doesn't automatically mean the virus is destined to die off. It just means the virus can't spread at an exponential rate. The virus will still spread.



Other issues to consider -

From what I've read, the vaccines are helpful against preventing symptoms but they're not sure if it stops asymptomatic infections. And as we know, the virus can spread easily even when you're asymptomatic.

Preliminary data suggests some vaccines are 95% effective but when there is more data available that number could drop. Anything less than 80-85% effectiveness would mean that in theory even if every person were to be vaccinated we still can't achieve the herd immunity, and so the virus will still be causing problems and we will find it hard to return to the 'old normal'.

The N439K mutation is completely included in the D614G samples, which have been observed to be more infectious than the original strain.


However, the efficacy of the antibodies may get disrupted due to the mutations. Currently, there are about 930 mutations reported worldwide. A mutation from ASP614 to GLY614 has made the virus more infectious, according to a report published in the journal News Medical and Life Sciences.

A quarter of people may already be immune to coronavirus even though many of them have never been infected, a new study by Public Health England (PHE) suggests.

Over the past few months, researchers have followed nearly 2,850 key workers from the police, fire and health services to gauge levels of immunity to the virus.

They discovered that, by June, one in four had high levels of T-cells which recognised Covid, suggesting they had some level of protection against the virus – but nearly half had never been infected.
