My prediction that Covid-19 will be mostly gone by April is based on laboratory data, mathematical data, published literature and conversations with experts. But it’s also based on direct observation of how hard testing has been to get, especially for the poor. If you live in a wealthy community where worried people are vigilant about getting tested, you might think that most infections are captured by testing. But if you have seen the many barriers to testing for low-income Americans, you might think that very few infections have been captured at testing centers. Keep in mind that most infections are asymptomatic, which still triggers natural immunity.

When I was an aerospace engineer, I interviewed one of the Lockheed guys who designed and built Viking.

I asked about sterilization and the possibility of "forward contamination" of Mars by Earth organisms.

He said, "We did our best, but as soon as the spacecraft was exposed to the air outside a clean room, it was contaminated. The Russians were really lax with their controls, so Mars probably got infected already".

As most SF fans know, back contamination of Earth or explorers by Mars flora and fauna is a worry. Forward contamination could wipe out indigenous Mars organisms.

IMHO, we should NOT colonize Mars for that reason.

BTW, I also interviewed the scientists at JSC who worked on the Allen Hills meteorite. The evidence they had was much stronger than what they published.

Conclusion? Mars HAS life, if only microbes. The Viking "soup" experiment gave strong indications of the same.

Why cross millions of miles and drop down into a gravity well again? What resources are on Mars that justify the expense?

Luna and the asteroids are a completely different case. The resources of the Inner Solar System are millions of times what we can mine on the surface of the Earth. There are resources for TRILLONS to live in rotating habitats a la Dr. Gerard O'Neill.

Parts of Texas are on the same Latitude as San Diego and the Gulf of Mexico is warmer than the Pacific Ocean. Imagine what would happen in Southern CA if it got anywhere near that cold here! Thank goodness for the high Sierra Nevada Mountains that block the progress of frigid temperatures into California. Also, cold winter storms in the Gulf of Alaska warm over the enormous Pacific Ocean and greatly warm the Alaska air temperature.

Herd immunity doesn't make respiratory viruses go away in the spring/summer . The weather does.

Wanted to thank y'all. I never had preps like we have before this thread. And because of them, we easily made through this weather event. I know we kept power, but we had a plan (think I posted it) to make a go of it in the one room with a fireplace. The days leading up to it, we moved the firewood next to the back door. We also had enough food water to keep us alive even if we had lost power. It wouldn't have been fun, but we would have been just fine.

We still have plenty of food now and will be fine until roads are good and stores are back stocked. Too many posting about needing to go to the store or rx filled, diapers, etc. I also see people wanting to get prepped and already working towards that.

I'm thankful we were ready, and it really is because of this thread. Big Texas Thanks!

mail locally is starting to slow down.have been told that bills and payments are being delayed as well,long enuf to cause late notices.

considering the mail is processed by machines and the post offices were re-configured a while back there is no reason for the slowdowns except covid.not that i have heard at least.
