Wonderful news this morning! Real-world data out of South Korea shows that just ONE dose of either Pfizer’s or AstraZeneca’s vaccine was 87% effective in preventing infections among people age 60 and older. Their analysis is based on more than 3.5M people.

This included 521,133 people who received a first dose of either vaccine. There were 1,237 COVID-19 cases in their data and only 29 were from the vaccinated group!

Remember what I said before. Why do you need the second dose? Because that second dose will reinforce the protection your immune system starts building after your first dose! This is only partial protection that will not be sustained. See my previous thread for more details.

That's a study with 3,500,000 people and only at half dose. I guess someone will want more data.

I guess the "furry" made up an entirely fake study and 3.5M people are in on it.

None of the experts quoted here said that the HIT is not attainable, only that it isn’t by vaccination alone. There will need to be some contribution from natural immunity, which is likely already to be close to sufficient. Why can’t the US paper of record utter this?

Quick mini-thread on the Seychelles:

There has been a surge in cases in the last few days, but as we’ve often seen lately, when you dig beneath the surface this is consistent with the vaccines working as advertised.

• More than half of people in the Seychelles are fully vaccinated. The rest are mostly unvaccinated (very few with just one dose)
• But only one-third of active cases there have been vaccinated

So that means the unvaccinated are roughly twice as likely as the vaccinated to have been infected, which is completely in-line with the 50% efficacy reported for Sinovac (the main vaccine in use in the Seychelles)

Good news is, those same Sinovac trials found 84% efficacy at preventing cases that went on to require medical intervention, and for preventing severe Covid efficacy was even higher
• So among the ~333 cases who’ve had both doses, the vaccine should keep most out of hospital

All of which is to say:
• Yes, the virus can still come back even where most have been vaxxed
• But it comes back stronger among those who haven’t
• High-efficacy vaccines work even better in this regard
• But even Sinovac still offers good protection against severe disease
