In this day and age it's actually not so fair.
We are programmed to believe that meteors look a certain way, we are programmed to believe that it's just a matter of time before one hits, and we are programmed to believe that the news is not a Hollywood production etc

With all that, it's not difficult to conclude that we can all be deceived quite easily through our senses. Throw a giant pyrotechnic missile in the sky and almost all would conclude it's a 'meteor', and the other witnesses plus news coverage confirms it as such. Does not make it a meteor though does it?
