Apu IS the most culturally appropriate shopkeeper they could ever have possibly imagined, at least in the 80s. Nowadays, Apu is retired, his kids went to med school, and the Kwik-E-Mart has been bought by recent Afghani Muslim “refugees” with a taxpayer-guaranteed SBA loan that most American citizens wouldn’t dream of qualifying for.

No he is smart. He plays the game on both sides.

Azaria is becoming just another Liberal cop-out; he didn't seem to have a problem performing as the campy Pharaoh with the thick lisp in those three NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM movies, now did he? Don't get me wrong: he's a very talented man... his performance as Cecil B. DeMille in SANDS OF OBLIVION was eerily spot-on! But, it sounds as if his moral compass needs the needle re-magnetized.

The bottomline is that -these days- you CAN'T do dialects without pissing someone off. It's become the spoken version of Blackface!

BTW: I happen to be a former voice-over actor myself, and made some decent money while doing it. The theater training I received back in the 70's was VERY vocal-heavy and the most difficult aspect of that was the mastering of dialects because you have to retrain not only your mind but also the muscles of your mouth to accurately duplicate native rhythms. FEW actors today bother, but at one time it was a cherished skill and those "character" actors were among the best-paid in the industry. And Azaria is one of the very BEST.

Acting students today never see such training offered in even the finest of universities; instead, if they're lucky they'll find an old pro who will privately tutor them -at great expense- to learn those skills. But studios always have them onhand: now you know what a "Dialogue Coach" does when you see the credits roll on your favorite films!

Being the closest to Seth’s actual voice, Brian the dog speaks for that show, and they did an episode where they had Rush Limbaugh as a guest, and he basically convinced Brian he’s right about everything, but in the end Brian declares he can’t change because he’s just too far into his liberalism.

This. I know lots of Indians that think Apu is really funny. One even has an Apu t-shirt. But those are the times we live in, we can't make fun of ourselves anymore. The only demographic that you can make fun of is white straight men.

My three Indian frat brothers sure did. We called them the Punjabi Mafia because they all came from extremely wealthy families and wore gold chains like they were 80s rappers. I’d move back to one of the old countries, but England and Ireland are both even crazier than we are with this stuff. Don’t you have some gay foreigner as your prime minister now? There's actually an irony to the Irish dialect! It's the most common one attempted by some drunk making a cheap joke at a party, but in reality with all of the natural nuances of spoken Irish-English it's also among the most difficult to master professionally. The Scots likewise have so many vocal fluctuations that it takes some serious work to get them just right.

I especially have ALOT of admiration for UK actors because they can really nail American dialects while our own actors rarely seem to pull off authentic counterparts.

I’ve got Scottish nailed. My wife actually tried to get me to just start talking like that back when we were dating, and I can do a passable Australian, English, hoodrat, New Jersey/Staten Island, Jamaican, and redneck, but Irish is really hard. Never could get a handle on it.
