You can delete IE from windows and your OS will still work just fine.
I recommend doing that.

I think it has to do with copyright issues. People figured out how to save images and sound clips and videos out of their cache bypassing the paywalls for downloading. Thing is, even if you use a different browser IE still keeps everything, but now it's in a proprietary file format and encrypted.
