It was a very clever way to get more recruits to sign up for the military. Nobody is going to space.

The DOD through some of the x-planes were developing combination jet/rocket craft, like the x-15 North American, right alongside NASA's public space program. That is only counting some of the currently declassified projects.

Eight of the test pilots that flew the x-15 qualified for astronauts wings.

The Space Force has been around a long time. They are just getting tired of hiding it and technology is rapidly locking the population into the big brother like DARPA Total Information Awareness Network.

According to this video, the "new" members of the Space Force were members of the Air Force, who were transferred into the Space Force.

This is a good, brief, primer video on the Space Force.

Another big reason for the Space Force is that China is rapidly advancing in space with plans to control the high ground with weapons. We need to get there first.

A bigger question is why a separate branch of the military when it seems like this is the domain of the Air Forcee.

There must be some compelling reason why the Air Force (which has been Space Command)is not taking on this new role.

If you have any ideas why the Air Force is NOT being given this command, post your opinions or comments, because I'd like to know. My personal opinion is, there is something wrong with the Air Force, and we don't trust them to do this job, or maybe they have failed at it already, or they won't give it enough attention, instead staying focused on the traditional projects and fat funding for ridiculously expensive air craft that will quickly become obsolete by the advances made in the new Space Force.

Well it makes sense to draw from the air force and a lot of the secret technology has probably been run through the air force up until now.

Most of the early astronauts were pulled from the air force test pilot programs and I am sure the x-15 North American and many other classified craft pilots were as well.

As for the question of why a new division and not simply allow the air force to take over space. I think it has to do with the fact that their skill set is not completely adequate for the task.

For fighter jet and stealth type craft the air force would of course be qualified, but if they are planning to branch out into large scale craft like frigate sized or larger, then really the Navy and maritime rules and regulations and strategies would probably be needed.

By creating a new division they can pull from the air force, Navy and even the army and marines as needed for their individual skill sets and saves the mess of trying to merge them or make any of them obsolete.
