Coronavirus: US will test people with flu symptoms, in significant expansion of government response

The US will begin testing people identified by local health authorities as having flu-like symptoms for the novel coronavirus, a senior official said Friday, a significant expansion of the government’s response to the epidemic.

“CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) has begun working with five public health labs across the US to tap into their ability to conduct community based influenza surveillance, so that we can begin testing people with flu-like symptoms for novel coronavirus,” said Nancy Messonnier, a senior CDC official.

The testing will initially be carried out by labs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and New York, but more sites are planned.

This is a significant change in posture for the CDC. Especially since we are in the throes of flu season. Oh, and this means the CDC admits there are cases walking around the country already.

Japanese Male In His 60s living In Nagoya Found Infected w/ New Coronavirus Friday. He felt Flu Symptoms In Hawaii On Feb.3, Diagnosed w/ Wuhan Pneumonia After His Return Home. Transmission Route Uncertain Yet.
Confirmed Japanese infection in their 60s in Nagoya New Coronavirus

Nagoya City announced on April 14 that it has confirmed the infection of a 60-year-old unemployed Japanese man living in the city over problems related to pneumonia (COVID 19) caused by the new coronavirus. It is the first time that Japanese people have been infected in three Tokai prefectures. The man is hospitalized and has reported fever and cough.

According to the city, the man complained of cold on March 3 while traveling with his wife in Hawaii, USA, and returned home on March 7. On August 8, the fever rose to 39 degrees, so she visited a medical institution in the city.

He recuperated at home on the 9th, but because of continued symptoms, returned to the same medical facility on the 10th and was diagnosed with mild pneumonia. She continued resting, but was transported to another medical institution by ambulance due to worsening symptoms on the 13th, and was hospitalized.
On March 14, the City Health Institute confirmed the virus positive by genetic testing..

Didn't see this on this thread, apologies if it's a dup. Have been going back and forth this morning.

Thread: Exclusive: Chinese doctors say Wuhan coronavirus reinfection even deadlier

That thread is about reinfection of the virus, which was admitted in the SCMP (Chinese official news) awhile ago. This, out of Taiwan, says the "reinfection" is worse than the original illness. First the links.

[link to www.scmp.com (secure)]

[link to www.taiwannews.com.tw (secure)]

Now, a very important idea that has me just about ill. You know that HIV has stages. It's described in an African paper, which I'll try to dig up for you. First stage, flu-like, similar symptoms to this corona virus, BTW. About 4 weeks.

Then the silent phase. No symptoms.

Third phase is the killer. This is concerning, because AIDS is very slow - can take a decade or more to kill. This one seems faster, but we may just be seeing tip of iceberg.

[link to www.scmp.com (secure)]

There are other reports, from medical authorities, but this one has the symptoms and events clearly delineated.

Except for the rash. A couple people I know developed what looked like measles spots - or acne -- but they didn't have that. Wonder if that's what this looks like. No doubt in my mind that we have it here, just wonder if we'll just carry on a decade or more before we croak.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78450814

Missed the right link, went there and copied the SCMP link on top of the address. Duh! Here is the right link

We're looking at a flu like illness, then asymtomatic period, then it hits hard. Will be interesting to see if this plays out in the new coronavirus as well.

[link to www.avert.org (secure)]

small snip (way less than 50%

here are three stages of HIV infection. The symptoms vary in type and severity from person-to-person.

Stage 1 after initial infection can feel like flu - not everyone will experience this.

Stage 2 may last for 10 years or more.

Stage 3 is when a person’s immune system is very badly damaged and can no longer fight off serious infections and illnesses.

State: Japanese visitor recently in Hawaii confirmed to have coronavirus

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A visitor who exhibited “cold-like symptoms” while in the islands earlier this month was diagnosed with coronavirus after returning to Japan, officials confirmed.

In a news conference Friday, state health officials said:

*The adult male traveler did not have any symptoms while visiting Maui from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3.
*But he did began to exhibit “cold-like symptoms” while on Oahu from Feb. 3 to Feb. 7.
*While on Oahu, he stayed at the Grand Waikikian by Hilton. The state is still seeking more details on his exact itinerary, including which flights he was on.

*He was diagnosed with the virus when he returned to Japan. State Health Director Bruce Anderson said it’s likely he was exposed before he left for Hawaii or while traveling here.

These labs were having issues with the testing supplies supplied by CDC. So not sure if that has been resolved.

The CDC will need to get all 150 or so participating labs in the USA up and run it really effing soon and will need to develop protocols to increase the accuracy of the test, or this will get out of hand.

The 1,000 cases from that kids dad text seems about right... and doubling every few days.

New crown pneumonia Japan says Olympics will not be cancelled or postponed

To confirm the preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a working coordination meeting between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee was held in Tokyo on February 13. At the beginning of the meeting, John Coates, chairman of the IOC Coordinating Committee, expanded on the pneumonia epidemic of the new coronavirus infection, saying "an unexpected issue has arisen and I would like to ask if measures have been taken to avoid the impact on players and audience ". The Tokyo Organizing Committee responded that the Olympics will not be cancelled or postponed.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee stated that the Olympic Games will not be cancelled or postponed.

Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee Chairman Mori said, "I want to reiterate that the Tokyo Olympics will not be cancelled or postponed. (We are in the Olympic Organizing Committee), and we have set up a countermeasures department. We hope to cooperate with the government to calmly respond."

She is so sick she called and said she cant breath i told her to go urgent care. They asked if she travels she said yup truck driver. They got her a mask and took her straight back to exam room. She said there were 20 people in the waiting room and they took her straight back.
They did a flu test no flu. Wanted her to go have a chest xray but she declined. They kept insisting but she kept refusing. She cant afford to be sick or not driving. They told her that here in corydon they dont have the virus test and she needs a chest xray....that said depending on what xray showed she would go from corydon hospital to Louisville to be tested and get this they told her they would have to test her 5 times at the Louisville hospital before releasing her.
My daughter does NOT believe in coronavirus says it’s nothing. Told the nurse nope and went home. They did not give her any meds and told her it could be Pneumonia. I fought with her over the phone for her to mind the urgent care doc. I didnt win.

Yes its probably flu or bad cold but interesting the way the urgent care handled it.

Guys,

I just attended a local emergency planning committee meeting in Central Texas this afternoon. We are about to be fucked. Do any final preps this weekend!

As we all know, only US Citizens are being allowed to come back from China and are being placed under federal quarantine. However, there are hundreds or thousands of people from China, who have green cards and/or visas, getting flights into Mexico and crossing the southern border legally. There is no way to vet these people. This is happening everyday. This discussion was held off the record after the minutes of the meeting were done being recorded.

The large majority of these people crossing the border are being denied housing by their families due to fear of the illness, so they are staying wherever they can, close to the border until they are sure they are not sick. There are scores of possible cases of Coronavirus in the Rio Grande Valley due to this. Look for the US Border Patrol and Customs at our southern border to be wearing the full PPE in the next couple days.

Think about what you would do, especially if you ARE ALREADY SICK in China, where all the hospitals are already maxed out, and you have US Green Card or Visa. You would do whatever possible to get back to the USA.

I call BULLSHIT. It's been a LONG time since swine hit kids this young.

If they DID decide to hide it until we have our shit together....HOW would we ever really know?

If they told the truth, how would it really help? If this kid WAS infected, that entire college would be on quarentine, and, the people of the town (Troy, NY), etc.....THEY would HAVE to lie.

Buckle up, Buttercup
