At this point those onboard are being used as guinea pigs. Every last one of them is going to end up infected. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75021818 I, for the life of me, can't figure out why they are still on board. If they aren't already infected. They may fear that is the case, hence leaving them on the ship. |

You mentioned the doctor in Africa wanting to test but has no kits. Well, I'm an ICU nurse in the USA. At least where I am, no one gets tested unless coming from China or connected to one. Hear out one of my examples: pt has come from overseas (not china though) and been through 6 international airports within a month, last time being about 2 weeks ago. Patient is in 30s, healthy/no hx prior, has every classic symptom of COVID19, within 2 weeks pt has progressed to the last stage being on ecmo, diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia now which is what happens to COVID19 patients. Even the MD agrees pt looks like a classic COVID19 case and yet per current policy Pt doesn't get tested and not even isolated and has been in an icu where only curtains separate patients. I have other info that would make this a whole lot alarming but can't share for the risk of pt privacy. What are the chances that it's already here under the radar. I guess we'll know in a month or 2 or at least I will because I've been exposed to it quiet properly myself. Anyways, it seems when it comes to testing at least, we are not doing much better than the good doctor in Africa. I’ve probably been on 10 cruises in my life, and the clientele are vile on everything from NCL and less expensive. Royal Caribbean has better passengers but they still have hygiene problems. No one washes their hands after using bathrooms, they don’t use the purell which is everywhere etc. Plus when there are coughers most don’t cover their mouths, so it’s like being in a subway. I was eating breakfast on an NCL with my parents, cousins, aunt, uncle, and my mom looked under the table to grab her purse and made us all look - someone had actually cut their toenails while eating breakfast. Vile people. I’ve never had the stomach bugs but have caught bad colds on my last two cruises. So I wouldn’t worry about the fact that so many people caught it on the cruise ship. What I am worried about is how Japan is unable to test all of these passengers. What am I missing? Is it impossible test for? I told you all in various threads about my ER experience a few days ago. Patients overflowing into the hallways and conference rooms. Coughers everywhere. Nurses coughing without masks on. So if japan can’t test a few thousand people on the cruise ship, that means they also can’t test the people showing up at their ERs. And it means the same for the US. I suspect there are thousands of cases just where I live. They can’t all have the flu. Once they develop a test that’s fast and accurate we are going to be shocked at how many here already have it. The Nav Centre is usually used for conferences and courses. It also hosts a fitness centre and swimming pool used by the public, and several popular bars and restaurants. It is not a high security site, nor is it remote...it is literally right on the edge of town. This is a disaster waiting to happen. I fully expect folks in this area to break out the torches and pitchforks. For those of you that don’t know where Cornwall is, it is located along the Hwy 401 corridor, the busiest stretch of highway in North America that runs from Windsor all the way through to Quebec City (it changes its name after crossing the Ontario/Québec border). The Hwy 401 corridor includes cities like Toronto and Montreal. Cornwall is directly across the St. Lawrence River from Massena NY. This is NOT the right place to be quarantining people. Even though CFB Trenton, the other quarantine site where Canada is keeping Wuhan evacuees is also near the 401, at least they are on a secured military base. Seems like some spineless adminstrator is afraid to find out the truth because of the repercussions. Medical staff might have to take matters into their own hands. And how many of the cured cases in china were actually " cured " vs "freed of the carrier state". I'm glad Canada is at least doing something right in all of this mess by having high standards for release from quarantine. (Must have 2 neg tests in a row.) But if its really this contagious and many people might be chronic carriers for who knows how long... What is the way out of this dilemma? How long can they hold people prisoners in their own homes? How long should they? Let's keep an eye on this guy and his wifey. we can get a good idea of duration and/or carriage state because canada wont release him until he has 2 negative tests He fell ill on the plane, that was the 22nd of January. So its been 3 weeks now and he's been symptom free for at least a week (according to internet ) Of the 7, the only one who has been released is the girl in London Ontario and I believe there is 2 or 3 more in Vancouver with a presumptive status from local lab dx. Vancouver airport has multiple direct flights arriving from China daily. Nothing is being done at the airport. We have no idea how many people have been entering that were exposed to the virus. There is so much travel between here and China that I figure it's only a matter of time before we see an explosion of cases here. I'll either get it or I won't and if I do, I will either get very sick or I won't. The horse bolted a month ago. Even if we barred the gate now, it's far too late. Light travels faster than sound. Also, wondering, which percentage of people on the ship who are infected, are Asian. Quoting: Katballoo We don't know, but the Germans are not Asian AFAIK. A study came out this week on the ACE2 receptor that said that there is no discernible difference between Asians and non-Asians, men vs women, young vs old. That means that COVID is an equal opportunity virus. However, they did find that smokers had a much higher amount of ACE2 receptors than non-smokers, implying that smokers are more likely to get sick. (And I thought I saw a statistic that 60% or some number like that, of Chinese smoke. I don't know if that part is true.) But then it was discussed that maybe air pollution might play a similar role as smoking in increasing ACE2 receptors. So, in a nutshell, this is not a 'race-specific' virus. The most likely possibility is that long hours of working without sleep, food, bathroom breaks, they got careless. Humans make mistakes. Quoting: Woodenboat [link to m.facebook.com (secure)] I think the biggest issue is, if cruise passengers start getting sick, are there sufficient health care facilities nearby that could handle a sudden influx of 'specialty patients'? Why are so many health care workers infected? Obviously, they have been using the N95 masks. What level of protection is needed? There are so many other issues with this emerging pandemic, that this one has been ignored, but should be front and center, and NOW, not tomorrow after we have thousands of more infected doctors and nurses. Would they be safer in the garb they use for ebola? I, too, have been pondering this. The most likely possibility is that long hours of working without sleep, food, bathroom breaks, they got careless. Humans make mistakes. Or, and this is less likely, 'standard precautions' are not enough, and full-blown self-contained breathing equipment is necessary to insure safety. I think it's carelessness, but there's this little part of my brain that's not so sure. OP is correct in his thinking. early on it was noted that ppl were getting the virus thru their eyes as well.the recommendation is at least wear goggles with the masks.
