Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

As at noon today (February 25), public hospitals had reported to the Department of Health the admission of 32 patients (14 male and 18 female, aged seven to 100) in the past 24 hours who met the reporting criteria of COVID-19. Appropriate tests have been arranged for the patients.

There are 103 patients under isolation currently. So far, 18 patients with the COVID-19 infection have been discharged upon recovery.

The Hospital Authority will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.

Italy Rolls Out Most Stringent Epidemic Measures Outside of China

On Sunday, the Italian government announced some of the most stringent emergency measures yet taken outside the Chinese mainland, giving municipalities and other jurisdictions in the Lombardy and Veneto regions of northern Italy, including Venice and Milan, a broad mandate to control the spread of the virus.

In the event that at least one resident of a city tests positive for the virus with an unknown source of transmission, cities have been instructed to restrict transportation; suspend public events and demonstrations in both public and private places; shut schools; suspend work and commercial activities; enforce quarantines, surveillance and health reporting; require the use of protective equipment when accessing public services, and more.

“The relevant authorities are required to take all appropriate containment measures proportionate to the evolution of the epidemiological situation,” the Italian government said in a statement. “Failure to comply with containment measures will be punished pursuant to … the Criminal Code.”



Comment: ONE confirmed case will shut down a city. This is drastic, no doubt. But, if you have 1, there will be more already.

Coronavirus: Two schools in Cheshire shut down after students return from Italy ski trips

One school has closed and another has shut its sixth form after students returned from half-term ski trips in Italy.

The two schools, both in Cheshire, made the decision on Tuesday and comes as Italian authorities continue to struggle to control an outbreak of COVID-19.

A message to parents from Richard Pollock, the headteacher of Cransley School in Northwich, said the closure would remain in place for the rest of the week to "completely minimise" the risk of infection.

It comes after a number of students and staff at the school had visited Bormio, northern Italy, last week, and had since been advised to self-isolate.

Meanwhile, Brine Leas Academy in Nantwich said on Twitter it had decided to close its sixth form "due to staff shortages."

No, not that I'm aware of. He did shake hands with the Iranian Foreign Minister when he was in Munich, then he did a tour of Africa. He got lots of flak for his friendliness towards the FM, because we're still supposed to be mad at Iran for shooting down the Ukrainian passenger jet with all of the Canadians on board. We did have a team of investigators that visited Iran though.

Coronavirus: infected health official leading South Korea’s fight against Covid-19 is member of Shincheonji Church of Jesus

A senior health official at the forefront of South Korea’s fight against Covid-19 has tested positive for the coronavirus – and identified himself as a member of the religious group linked to hundreds of other cases.

The official, whose name has been kept from the public, is the head of the Infection Preventive Medicine Department in the western district of Daegu City, which is at the epicentre of the outbreak in South Korea.

Daegu, population 2.2 million, and its surrounding province of North Gyeongbuk, account for 681 of the 833 infections confirmed in the country as of Monday afternoon. More than 450 of those cases have already been identified as followers of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which mainstream churches regard as a doomsday cult, and experts believe this number is likely to rise.

Consequently, 50 other health officials who worked with him have been quarantined at their homes as a precautionary measure.
