Nationwide stay at home order is "pretty unlikely," Trump says

President Trump said that while the administration has talked about a potential nationwide stay-at-home order, it is “pretty unlikely at this time.”

Trump told reporters in the Rose Garden Monday that while the administration has “talked about” a nationwide order, similar to those of some states, but said it would be very “tough” to enforce and “not something we wanted to do.”

“If we do that we will let you know, but it’s pretty unlikely at this time,” Trump said, adding he will keep allowing governors to make the calls for their own states.

Weasel words.....'at this time' 'unlikely'

I give it 10 days before we see it. This is how Trump operates. He has said repeatedly "no way" his would shut down the country. Now he's walking those words back.

Mark my words. Trump will act.

Coronavirus could be airborne, study suggests

It may be possible for the novel coronavirus to transmit through the air, a new study released over the weekend suggests.

[snip]

The findings offer “limited evidence that some potential for airborne transmission exists," researchers said, though they warned that the findings do not confirm airborne spread

[snip]

Researchers, looking to better understand viral shedding and how it related to the novel virus, took air and surface samples from 11 patients’ rooms during the initial isolation of 13 people who tested positive for COVID-19. The researchers found virus genetic material on commonly used items such as toilets, but also in air samples, thus indicating that “SARS-CoV-2 is widely disseminated in the environment.” SARS-CoV-2 is the name of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Not only was the virus detected within COVID-19 patients’ rooms, “air samplers from hallways outside of rooms where [the] staff was moving in and out of doors were also positive,” they wrote.

“These findings indicate that disease might be spread through both direct (droplet and person-to-person) as well as indirect contact (contaminated objects and airborne transmission) and suggests airborne isolation precautions could be appropriate,” they concluded, noting that the findings also suggest that COVID-19 patients, even those who are only mildly ill, “may create aerosols of virus and contaminate surfaces that may pose a risk for transmission.”

Transmission Potential of SARS-CoV-2 in Viral Shedding Observed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center

Abstract

Lack of evidence on SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics has led to shifting isolation guidelines between airborne and droplet isolation precautions. During the initial isolation of 13 individuals confirmed positive with COVID-19 infection, air and surface samples were collected in eleven isolation rooms to examine viral shedding from isolated individuals. While all individuals were confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2, symptoms and viral shedding to the environment varied considerably. Many commonly used items, toilet facilities, and air samples had evidence of viral contamination, indicating that SARS-CoV-2 is shed to the environment as expired particles, during toileting, and through contact with fomites. Disease spread through both direct (droplet and person-to-person) as well as indirect contact (contaminated objects and airborne transmission) are indicated, supporting the use of airborne isolation precautions.

They are using the pandemic influenza model, i.e. 3 waves. If cases peak in 2-4 weeks, I could see a 2nd wave in the Fall. IF COVID is seasonal. If it isn't affected by weather, and looking at places like Florida now seems to indicate it's NOT seasonal, then I'm not sure the "3 wave" model will aply.

Thanks for the thread, OP! I've been lurking in the other Covid-19 thread, but this one is great as well, and I appreciate the updates.

I'm blessed I'm able to work from home in Missouri. Our dumb governor is refusing to issue a stay-at-home order and is instead calling for "individual responsibilities".

Let me tell you, these people are not smart enough to self-quarantine. It's disheartening. The Missouri State Medical Association is asking Gov. Parsons to issue a stay-at-home order, citing it as the only way to curb the exponential spread:

"If things progress as is, COVID-19 patients will deplete the state's available hospital beds, ventilators, and precious personal protection equipment. Any additional time without a 'shelter in place' requirement wastes crucial healthcare resources, including manpower."

Louisiana pastor who led 1,000-person service charged with violating state's order on large gatherings

Mark Anthony Spell, pastor of Life Tabernacle Church in Central, Louisiana, was charged today with six counts of violating the governor's executive order not to hold gatherings larger than 50 people, the Central Police Department announced in a statement on Facebook.

On Sunday, Spell said his church in Baton Rouge drew about 1,000 people to its services, in part by busing people in from across five parishes.

"Mr. Spell will have his day in court where he will be held responsible for his reckless and irresponsible decisions that endangered the health of his congregation and our community. This is not an issue over religious liberty, and it’s not about politics. We are facing a public health crisis and expect our community’s leaders to set a positive example and follow the law," the police department said in its statement.

Some context: This is not the first instance of someone getting charged for violating the order. Over the weekend, New Orleans police charged the organizer and bandleader of a second line after a funeral in the city.

I need a little help making a plan. My dad is not long for this world, and it's getting more difficult for him to move around. I've been keeping him secluded for obvious reasons, but it won't really matter if he gets it now, anyway. However, I plan to be around a while and don't want to get sick. My dad's grand kids want to see him, and say good bye, as does my sister. I need ideas on how I can accomplish this without endangering myself; so basically he can't get COVID either. I need a plan to do it at my house- maybe through a window, or maybe a screen with some sort of positive pressure in the living room.

Or in a car. This might be easier, but I'm not sure he can walk to the car. ( I do have a wheelchair, in case.) So, any thoughts on minimizing the risk to him and myself?

Or should I just say "fuck it" and try to set up a skype chat or Zoom meeting. I feel bad that the grandkids can't see him right now.

I have about 3 weeks to figure it out, as that's when we start to taper off the prednisone, and he will not feeel like doing much of anything.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

Do you have a good sized window and perhaps walkie talkie's? I would definitely make sure that there is no contact. But, a window and walkies would allow them to see each other & talk to each other. Are the children able to understand the situation, and does your dad want to see them? If in that situation, I'd go with his wishes. Try to find that out, before moving to the next step.

At least 80% of Americans are under stay-at-home orders

More than 262 million Americans are currently under stay-at-home orders -- over 80% of the US population -- according to a CNN count.

This count includes state, city and county orders. The numbers were tallied using US census data.

Among the most heavily impacted states are:

California: 39.5 million people
New York: 19.4 million people
Illinois: 12.6 million people
Ohio: 11.6 million people
North Carolina: 10.4 million people

We observed 22 patients who had positive RT-qPCR results for SARS–CoV-2 in the sputum or feces after pharyngeal swabs became negative. These finding raise concern about whether patients with negative pharyngeal swabs are truly virus-free, or sampling of additional body sites is needed. It is important to emphasize, however, that it is not known whether the positive RT-qPCR results for SARS–CoV2 observed here indicate that a patient continues to pose a risk for infection to others. Related, positive throat samples (after negative samples) after hospital discharge have been reported
