Illinois reports biggest one day jump in coronavirus cases and deaths

Illinois announced 1,209 new cases and an additional 53 deaths Friday in the biggest one day jump in both cases and deaths the state has seen to date.

At a Friday news conference, Gov. J.B. Pritzker also urged residents to wear a mask when going outside.

I'm really concerned about this hiome made mask/bandana recommendation. It may offer some protection, but not a lot. It's more for the mask wearer to not spread his germs, and not for the unifected to avoid getting it. It's going to give people a false sense of security. N95 or higher people. Do not feel guilty for buying masks a month or 2 ago when there were hundreds in every store in the country.

COMMENTARY: Masks-for-all for COVID-19 not based on sound data

In response to the stream of misinformation and misunderstanding about the nature and role of masks and respirators as source control or personal protective equipment (PPE), we critically review the topic to inform ongoing COVID-19 decision-making that relies on science-based data and professional expertise.

As noted in a previous commentary, the limited data we have for COVID-19 strongly support the possibility that SARS-CoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19—is transmitted by inhalation of both droplets and aerosols near the source. It is also likely that people who are pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic throughout the duration of their infection are spreading the disease in this way.

Data lacking to recommend broad mask use

We do not recommend requiring the general public who do not have symptoms of COVID-19-like illness to routinely wear cloth or surgical masks because:

There is no scientific evidence they are effective in reducing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission
Their use may result in those wearing the masks to relax other distancing efforts because they have a sense of protection
We need to preserve the supply of surgical masks for at-risk healthcare workers.

Sweeping mask recommendations—as many have proposed—will not reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission, as evidenced by the widespread practice of wearing such masks in Hubei province, China, before and during its mass COVID-19 transmission experience earlier this year. Our review of relevant studies indicates that cloth masks will be ineffective at preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission, whether worn as source control or as PPE.

I see this more and more. People only focusing on possible numbers of Covid deaths. They can’t seem to look beyond as the dominos fall.
 Quoting: miabelieves

Our president said two weeks until the peak, but one of the models I was looking at shows the peak at four weeks, with 2,500+ DEATHS PER DAY (let me say that again: "PER DAY") at the end of April.

Meanwhile, testing and ventilator production will be ramping up, but they are behind and who knows if they can get in front of this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1839550

both times are correct. when u flatten the curve the peak never hits a point,it is a flat line. so the # at the "peak" is scattered along a line. as u have pointed out this means the death rate extends along this line instead of hiting a peak as well.

this is what the task force didn't say when they explained the flattening of the curve. this method works to delay overwhelming the hospitals<i don't think it will avoid it completely>. the length of time locked down is also extended. what would happen in 3mths,will now b 6 mths.

if CHINA were to magicaly come back online by end of June, the US would b looking at feb next year. instead of a spike and overwhelm the hospitals quicker, everything is just delayed.

failure of masks is partly due to the virus surviving on surfaces so long. ppl touch everything and then their faces.

masks with gloves and goggles is recommended. problem is governments are at least a month behind GLP.

Have not been off the property interacting with anyone since March 6 until yesterday, I tried that Walmart grocery pickup deal. It worked fine, except the door on the rear of the van got stuck and hubby had to get out and manhandle the damned thing open, lol. The wind was BRUTAL and I doubt the girl standing there with our groceries would have been able to infect him if she'd been trying! That service worked fine except that three items I ordered were not available. (I did not plan well for the garden needs, so I got a couple of bags of potting mix and since I had to spend a bit more in order to use that service, I went ahead and ordered some food - all junkie stuff except a head of lettuce since my homegrown is not ready for harvest yet!)

The pick up area seemed pretty busy to me, but then again, we've never used that service before, so maybe that was normal for them? I counted 7 cars there during the time we were there.

Saw a fearmongering piece at ZH earlier about "oh noes, the farmers cannot plant because of the virus!" which is complete and TOTAL bullshit. Basically there is corn for miles and miles around us here, and there are NO MIGRANTS NEEDED for the planting process. None. It's ALL done by massive huge pieces of equipment, guided not by human hand but via satellite. I'm thinking the wheat planting is probably the same, but have not witnessed that first hand.

The state has had 6 deaths so far.

That's the update from my little corner of south central Nebraska.

[link to virologyj.biomedcentral.com (secure)]

Abstract

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (SARS-CoV). No effective prophylactic or post-exposure therapy is currently available. [i.e., in 2005]

Results: We report, however, that chloroquine has strong antiviral effects on SARS-CoV infection of primate cells. These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage ….

Conclusion: Chloroquine is effective in preventing the spread of SARS CoV in cell culture. Favorable inhibition of virus spread was observed when the cells were either treated with chloroquine prior to or after SARS CoV infection...

There are studies from the 1970s on quinine for influenza, and in the 1980s for its effectiveness against pediatric pneumonia. It's been known for a looooong time as a broad spectrum anti viral.

That is a huge problem for those who benefit from the vaccine industry (directly ... or INdirectly). If a simple and cheap med that is out from under patent and widely available can be used to stop influenza/pneumonia...those who built their little fiefdoms from financial advantages gained by gaming the population into taking "flu shots" and "pneumonia shots" are going to find themselves in the poor house.

They no likey, so they oppose the word getting out about chloroquine.

Trump basically shit in their vaccine punchbowl, and they're very pissed at him for having done so.

Patients in New York seem sicker than before, nurse says

Kelley Bradshaw, an intensive care unit nurse at a large New York hospital, told CNN the coronavirus patients she's seeing this week seem sicker, with more advanced symptoms.

"Compared to last week, the patients are sicker and that tends to happen with a virus that's this vicious," she said. "It starts with affecting one part of the body and then it starts to affect more and more body systems."

Bradshaw said she was seeing more cases of the virus affecting patients' kidneys and hearts.

It's not clear if the patients seem sicker because the virus is presenting itself in a different way, or if the patients are trying to wait it out at home, so they are already sicker by the time they arrive at the hospital.

"It just feels like the longer someone battles this virus and the more critically ill they become, the harder our job gets," Bradshaw said. "The days are really, really long ... The only thing we can expect is to expect the unexpected."

I think the idea that so many are infected but undetected means a lower mortality rate. Many have little to no symptoms,, this is a good thing on many levels because until there is a vaccine or herd immunity we are going to be needing lockdowns to control the hospital loads.

If this has spread faster than we have detected and perhaps there are many just naturally immune then maybe it is just a 3-4 peak and pretty much over

I keep hearing about "so many" many infected but undetected, but there has been no evidence of this. In fact, in the one China study I saw back when Hubei was a hot spot, it said that, in fact there were very few undetected cases. And that while ~80% of cases are mild, they could still be clinically/epidemiologically diagnosed as positive, and were included in the later Hubei infected counts.

This "statistic" is used to artificially lower the death rate numbers, I believe. We should not hang our hats on a low mortality rate just because there are "so many" undetected cases out there. Show me the numbers. Oh, wait, you have to test to do that. We need to test every person in the US to get a true idea of what's happening. And to allow us to segregate the infected from the well.

Store owners boarding up buildings across Manhattan

NEW YORK - A growing scene for those who venture out into the streets of Manhattan these days is boarded up storefronts. From luxury retailers to small bars, establishments that have no idea when they are going to be allowed to reopen are putting up protection over their glass doors and windows.

The businesses have taken the unsightly measure in an effort to defend against the potential for civil unrest caused by the coronavirus and a lack of officers on the streets.

It will be over at some point, probably. If there is a treatment or vax, sooner rather than later. If we just have to deal with it like influenza, then probably longer as we try to figure out how to deal with the "new normal."

That's if things don't go full retard. If that happens, all bets are off, and the "new normal" will make sheltering-in-place look like a luxury vacation.
